I've done it. No stripping needed. Just rough it up a little. Prime it. Paint it. Clear it. Then replace the mounting tape on the back with some 3M molding tape.

If you strip the chrome, you may lose the smooth/roundness of the surface. So when you look at them, the light never hits the same as when they were original.

I've painted the Toyota grille emblem, the V8 grille piece and a TUNDRA emblem from the 07 truck. All look good in their new sheen.
