Be sure that you rinse it off with a lot of water first before you start to wipe it at all. Bird need to eat sand/gravel to digest food and of course it's in their crap. (Worms do this too).
If you use synthetic wax, you'll find that it lasts a year and not very much sticks to it. This is preventive - too, you don't have to worry about acids and if someone should egg your car, no big deal there either. Wash when you get around to it vs. as soon as you find out.
If you don't use synthetic wax, then it's a good idea to neutralize the acids - just about any household cleaner that is amonia base will do. Rinse off as much as you can with water, soak a sponge with 409, simple green, etc and lay it on the rest of the crap to soak in. 15 minutes later - blast it off with water. You shouldn't have to scrape anything. Soaking is the best way - it WILL get so soft it just washes off with a blast of water.
But if you're not sure on what's on the paint, then neutralize the crap. The baking soda is a good idea if you make a paste. Keeping it wet with plain water for 15 minutes will soften it enough - so will parking it in a good rainstorm and washing with a hose before it dries again.
Putting a blob of polish on it and wiping it off after 15 minutes before it dries will work too. (Of course you're not doing any of this out in the sun!!!)
Remember to polish and wax afterward!!!!
