I have an 08 RAV 4 and noticed the same thing. We bought it in October and I found a few chips on the edge where the driver's door meets the rear door. It is in an odd place so I doubt it is environmental. I don't think mine is crumpling, as you described.

I showed the dealer and all I got was a free tube of touch up paint. I am keeping an eye on it to see if it worsens.
