If this were a designed experiment we could think of it as a fractional factorial with the main effects (HC removed and ECU reset) aliased. Its like a 2^2-1 if such a thing existed.

That being said I happily removed my HC thing, reset the ECU and thought about the better gas mileage and throttle response while driving it.
