Re: 19.8mpg after HC removed!
I am thinking of pulling my HC to test the theory. I have detailed MPG records from the computer and my own manual calculations going back to the first tank off the dealer lot so I should be able to spot even a slight increase.
The main factor for MPG seems to be your average speed. 50-60 mph is the most efficient speed range for almost all conditions but very few people seem to drive this speed. It isn't even safe to drive 55 when the speed limit is 70 and everyone is doing 75-85. But if you want the best MPG then slow it down.
The next biggest factor seems to be driving conditions. Driving uphill, into a head wind, in hot weather, and in higher elevations seems like it would lower your MPG no matter what you do. Driving on flat level highways, no wind, cold weather, with no traffic and few lights would make it a whole lot better but few of us get to do that regularly.
The next biggest factor seems to be vehicle weight. Lots of passengers or cargo will reduce MPG significantly. So I am thinking about removing my spare tire, tool boxes, and misc. stuff which I don't use that often. Heck, I could even remove the back seats since I rarely need them. I wonder if this would save me any real $$?
