As you stated before, i'm also not a mechanic by any means but what I can say is that two piece drive shafts are made to have give or play in them. Now, if your truck is like mine was when you come to a stop or take off you feel the clunk/thud. Apparently that is the driveshaft where the two pieces come together (slip yoke) binding, not being able to freely move. When the grease is added, it can move freely as it was designed to do. All i can say is mine is still smooth and today i towed our bass boat with no issues as well.
