The sooner the better. People can accept a 18-24mpg vehicle. Also, even if diesel is 20% more than gas you still come out ahead if your fuel consumption is 25% less.

Toyota must just not buy into the perceived American midset that the diesel engine should be sold at a premium. Just look at the $51 000 MB 320 CDi (it sells at only $1000 over it gas counterpart).
