Well, I'm bummed...
This morning on the way to work, the dreaded creaking started again -- not as bad as before, but definitely there. I did the backer rod mod last summer, but re-did it again about a month ago because I think I had the rod too far in and the creaking was terrible. Anyway, now after a month of silence, the creaking is coming back. This got me thinking... The very thing that makes the backer rod an easy to install solution to the creaking problem is the very thing that makes it temporary -- it's very compressible.
Basically, I think after a while (your mileage may vary), the rod gets compressed to the point that it no longer applies outward pressure on the dash from the windshield and the creaking returns.
I'm looking for something a little more permanent...does anyone know where I could get some rubber cord? The cord would have to be smaller than the backer rod -- say 1/4" - 3/8" in order to fit between the windshield and the dash. Since it wouldn't compress like the backer rod did, this might be a permanent fix to something that's been driving me crazy for 2 winters now...
