I could do it as a day trip if someone wishes to caravan out there and wants company for the journey. I’d estimate a 2 to 2.5 hour one-way trip from Orange County out to Borrego Springs.

Although it is a long drive to the trailhead, the excursion only takes about 6 hours – a couple hours of 4 wheeling to get to the site, a couple hours to service the equipment and a couple hours of 4 wheeling to come back out.

So a day trip would be a 10-12 hour day, depending on where you start.

OTOH, if someone wishes to wander around a bit more, I’d stay overnight and explore before or after the main run. My cousin works for the USGS, so I‘d bunk with him. There are nice hotels and campsites right in Borrego Springs, so an overnight trip could fit into anyone’s budget.
