Best bet is to not advertise to the world what you have. If you can peek into the house/vehicle through a window and see all the good stuff, you have already lost. I had one case at a house that had security cameras on the outside that recorded 24/7. The dirt bag went up to their vehicle, ripped out the lock and then stole the stereo. Took him about 3 minutes total. Camera system was easily seen from outside and it was a decent system. It was great at showing that the crime actually took place, that was about it.

In that, if you are going to buy one, spend the extra money and get a good quality system, not just a cheap one. One that records a very clear imagine instead of a fuzzy, static style image. Also don't just cover your driveway, think about a total 360 degree view around your house if you want to feel even more warm and fuzzy.
