For what it's worth the trailer weighs 5150# on the axles w/ full fresh water but none of our stuff.

Am I transferring more weight than I should be, or does that look about right?

Forget the L brackets, put them at the starting position that the manual suggests. Throw in 8 washers on the stop that goes against the hitch. That made the biggest difference for me. Weigh your axles without the trailer to use as a starting point. Then when you put the bars on you should see an almost equal amount of weight go to each axle. So if your hitch is 600lbs then 300 should go to each. I have set it up before and put more weight on the front axles than the back...you want it even. If you put a piece of tape above your wheels you can measure the drop in inches and it should be equal.
