Ports without tubing actually work very well due to their low loss (the air friction caused by a longer port tube can hurt the efficiency of the port). This type of port is harder to design due to lack of ability to tune properly - once you cut it too big, it's over. When I build a ported box, I always look at the impedance curve to tune it the way I want. You'd be surprised at how far off the manufacturer's thiele/small specs actually are for a given driver. If they're not accurate, don't bother building the box according to the instructions given by the manufacturer - it won't sound right without tuning it afterwards.
The OP's box is actually more of a 1/4 wave transmission line than a ported box.
