Had a Z71 that was really slow to engage. My mechanic at the time said there was a pin that is supposed to slide in and and out to engage 4wd. He said it wears over time and sometimes needs to be replaced. I have no idea if our trucks are same but maybe something like that is the problem. Sorry I cant be more specific but I only had that truck for a year and never bothered to fix the problem so I dont know any more details than that.

Mustang67408 is a toyota mechanic and seems to know his stuff. Search his profile on this site and try to get hold of him directly. He may be able to help you out.
