Hello there:
Does anyone use Syntetic OIL ?
I just have 7K miles on my new Sequoia and I'd like to start using it, but any advice is welcome. According to the manual 5W30 is the grade to go.
Your 6K miles too late! I went to Mobil 1 5W30 & Mobil 1 Oil Filter M102 at 1K and have not had any issues! I refuse to whine like others about making a mess when changing oil, ya just have to be 10% smarter than the oil!
I see no reason not to, i waited on my 93 Camry till 20K and i just sold it with 119K on it and never used any oil the whole time! I hear that once ya go Synthetic you are not supposed to go back to conventional oil but i wold call Mobil and see what their engineers take would be on that? but why go back?
am using amsoil 5w30 coupled it with the amsoil dual filtration system

unless you want a drain longer than 5k dont waste your cucumbers.
later on you will get over wanting "the best" for your truck.
walmart 5w-30 and supertech 3614 filter are all you need.
the others will have convulsions about quality, or longer drains equalling
less money over time.
you will likely trade, sell, wreck, or really quit caring long before the difference b/t some profile synthetic and supertech 5w-30 dino make any
diff in the longevity or roadworthiness of your ride. but, do what you want. I do. and so do the rest.
I trust my mechanic completely. He believes that the engine non-synthetic oil quality has improved so much that for the last few years there isn't as much to be gained any more by using synthetic. He has nothing to gain either way, so there's no motive on his part to recommend this. So I've been maintaining engine oil accordingly.
On a side note, he does still recommend synthetic for the transmission, differentials, and transfer case.

Realistically, there isn't anything stopping you from switching back and forth. Basically the deal is that in the engineering, the synth has been protective properties that prevent wear on the internal engine components as well as it disipates heat better. You can start or stop at any time. As far as conventional motor oil...the newest API standard oils offer excellent protection. Think about it...if it wasn't good for the vehicle, your truck wouldn't come with it installed...manufacturers know best. At any rate you can go with the regular stuff, Mobil One, or all of the way up to Royal Purple. My only qualm is that I don't really trust the extended interval so, I usually don't let it go for any more than 5000 miles. Good luck.
There is no comparison between the conventional oil and the synthetic oil. To the member that indicated that he trusts his mechanic, just remember that he (the mechanic) is the one getting the business when your vehicle breaks down. If you don't care about the Truck or if you just don't care about maintenance, it is ok. do not use synthetic oil. For those who care, synthetic oil does not breakdown or burn as miles accumulate. You probably wont see the difference between the 4000 miles old synthetic oil and the new (zero miles) synthetic oil. the engine runs smother (no question about it).
By the way, do not wait 10,000 miles or 8,000 miles to change your oil. the most that I would wait is 4,500 miles and I use Mobil 1 Synthetic oil ( the cost: Priceless for my Baby)
I drive a 2003 Sequoia LTD Phantom Gray
purchased it brand new at Atlantic Toyota ( In Amityville NY)
OEM navigation, Reverse camera, OEM DVD player
Just turned 46,000 miles and I love it.
Recent trips:
Feb. 2007 New York to Miami (and everything in between) and back
March 2007 New York to Portland Maine and back
June 2007 New York to Niagara Falls (Canadian side) and back

I guess thats why the new Mobil 1 long life oil says its good for 15000 miles so you can change it every 4500.
My money, my truck. I guess spending $50.00 on your truck every 4 months is just tooooooo much. I gave up one cup of coffee a week (at starbucks) and that's the money I use for my oil change.
I dont want to jump into a the middle of someone elses spat, but in jan kohlmann's defense, first you said this:
"You probably wont see the difference between the 4000 miles old synthetic oil and the new (zero miles) synthetic oil."
.... and then you said:
"...the most that I would wait is 4,500 miles"
Whats happening in those 500 miles thats taking perfectly good, almost new looking oil, to oil thats overdue for replacement? I've been running all my vehicles (Mobil-1) at 10,000 mile changes (with an interim 5000 mile filter change) for as long as I remember, and even that is too soon. I've seen the oil analysis of engines running 15,000 mile changes using Mobil-1 and the oil was still well within spec. Obviously Mobil is in the business of selling more oil, not less. It wouldnt make sense for them to recommend a longer interval if their oil really wasnt up to it. I agree your money your truck, but recommending 4500 mile changes is based on emotion, not fact.
