1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "should i fix or sell my '01?", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
What would you do? I just received the diagnosis of an exhaust manifold leak. I've been driving around with the ticking for years, and now they tell me I have the leak. I wonder what kind of toxic fumes I've been exposing my family to?
I understand from the forum and my mechanic that it will be around $1500 to fix the exhaust manifold. I have 109k miles on the Sequoia but I love the car. Drives well.
I also have perforation of the differential cover from the salt here in NE. A friend told me that we could just replace the cover and get it done in 1 hour. The mechanic was talking about trying to find the entire rear differential which would cost $2k.
I havne't had the 90k service - didn't even know that there was such thing until I read this forum. I didn't know about any recalls or TSB's either until I started researching whether to sell this car and get another.
I asked a local dealer to give me an estimate on fixing the things I just listed and for doing the servicing. They haven't gotten back and I don't know if they are good or not. But I am a bit sorry I didn't keep taking it to a dealer for some service after I bought it at 55k mileage when it was 2 years old. If they had found the perforation before 100k it would have been under warranty, I think. I just didn't think about warranties and took it to my local guy.
I also want to say that we replaced the rear door handle twice due to corrosion and malfunction. We replaced the window mechanism once when it quit. We replace the radio antennae when it froze in the winter and then the motor died trying to send it up (very poor design for our climate).
We've also had a lot of brake work done on the car - replacement of the master cylinder in front, the whole works. Mechanic said we had an unusual amount of corrosion on this and all our cars because we don't wash them in the winter.
Should I sell it or get it fixed. I love this car and are nearing the end of driving a lot of kids around, but still make those carpool runs from time to time.
It's going to be hard to sell it with those issues personally I'd fix it but i'd know going into it that I might not get ALL the money back from the repairs.
People always try to say well it has new this new that, well that's the normal wear and tear of a car especially when they try to charge me for the new tires or brakes. You have something unusual but still you can't expect to get it back.

Thanks, Tommy. I'm leaning towards keeping it. Have you hit the 100k mark? How long does a Sequoia last? Will I be fixing it to last another 35k miles? That seems like an important factor.
I'd say fix it, but that's because I've got 120K on mine and have sunk a lot of upgrade money (wheels and tires, brakes) into it, plus know I've passed the point of having a lot of value to trade. So I guess I'm committed to ride this puppy for a good while, which is OK. I didn't get it for personality, just need it to work well and not complain! If I had your diff issue I might feel differently, though.
how bad can the diff issue be? the friend says its probably just the cover - and that's $250 to buy and takes an hour to install and he says we can do it. The trusted mechanic seems to be saying we should replace the whole thing at $2k in cost.
On the repair, $1,500 for a manifold swap $2,000 for a rear end, find a new mechanic.
You can have all this done for around or under $2k possibly less, JBA headers timing belt rear end cover, if you want payments, you could trade it in as is, the dealer may not give any more if you fix it, I think these are very minor for a 100k mile vehicle. Me I would trade it on a crewmax, but thats me.
Keep it... the Seq is good for much more than another 35K. I've got 120K on my '02 SR5 and I still think the truck drives like new. Spend the $$$ to get the issues fixed, there'll be very little more cash put into it to keep it running.
Surprised about the brake issues though. But living in sunny S. Florida, I have no idea what winters do to vehicles.
Spend 500.00 On A Set Jba Headers And The Diff Deal Is It The Front Orrear. Becuase If The Rear It Has No Diff Cover It Has A Third Member So That Be Expensive. But My 01 Has An Exhuast Leak To And Im Getting The Jba;s.i Work At Summit Racing So If You Want Those Give Me A Call 1-800-230-3030 And Ask For Ext 5772 Or Yager.

I only have 74K on mine but luckily *knock on wood* I haven't had any of the issues that I have seen mentioned on this site. I have no doubt that I can probably get 200K out of it with minimal repairs.

you haven't done any service for 50,000 miles so its time to work on the truck and get her up to speed. Your other choice is to leave it alone trade it in to the stealer and let him worry about it. I personally would not sell it outright with those issues I have too much integrity for that.
i was going to do a tradein since we live in a small town and your integrity is frankly the most important thing you own.
The dealer says that they can do it for $1500 - rear diff cover (but Supralsx says that it doesn't have a cover but a third member), exhaust manifold (for one side they said, assuming it only needs one side of the v-8), and the 90k service, with an additional $350 if the timing belt needs replacement.
Today I noticed a rumble when I applied the brakes - is that the rear differential showing symptoms, or the brakes, again! Have others had the rumble and do you know what it is?
I'm perfectly willing to do the work to get this car to run well if it can give me as many more miles as folks are saying here. I love this car's ability to get me anywhere I need to go in all kinds of bad road and weather conditions. I have new Nokia snows, and new radials for summer too.

I agree with trading on a new 2008 plus crewmax Toyota has done a great job on the new 5.7 liter v8 and the offroading on these new rig is pretty good. I had the chance to go off roading with my friend in his new Crewmax and really liked the ride and overall space the crewmax has over the Double cab's. About Trading yea if the cost exceed a lot I think it's worth it in the long run esp since you have the first gen Sequioa which CR rated pretty bad on problems also when it comes to the first year issues with Toyota i tend to avoid them so 2007 Tundra is out of the picture.

the mechanic told me today that he can take the differential apart - the rear has no cover - and fill the perforations with fiberglass and put it back together and t hat should be good for a year or two. He said I can ignore the ticking, since I've had it for years and there would be only a tiny leak of exhaust from there that doesn't get into the cabin.
He said that he will oil up the brake lines underneath since he is worried about rust and corrosion causing other elements like this to fail in the coming year. He said he can't practically sand down the frame underneath where there is rust already.
does all this sound crazy? He said to bring the car in later for the 110k check up to the dealer, but he doesn't think it needs a timing belt or water pump.

First off timing belt's need to be replaced Now and when i say that Toyota does mention 90k and based on the age now you need to get this work done. The timing belt's should be around $39 in cost and the Oem water pump is $93 you need to get both done I have once on my 00 Tundra anythingtoyota ask for bill.
About Rust on your sequioa Toyota does add rubber coating under the frame on the Tundra/Seq so I would really inspect this from yourself it's not too hard to do and you might do the work yourself if your mech Inclined like myself.

Do you not wash your cars in the winter? I have family that lives in CT and they don't seem to have these issues when it comes to rust. When you live somewhere that uses a lot of salt you need to frequently wash during the winter.
If you do that then I'm shocked its rusting like you say.
