1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "Exhaust Manifold Leak", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
There may be a crack in my exhaust manifold which is common for the 2001 Sequoia. Is there a risk of harmful exhaust entering my car? If I pay to have it fixed, is there a common reason I should be aware of that may cause the same problem in the future? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I have the same problem. Around 30K I started hearing a loud ticking (sounds like the valve lifters) and once it warmed up the sound went away. Dealership informed me that the exhaust manifold was cracked and since it was under warranty they replaced it (this was the left side). Then around 60K the right side started doing the same thing. Dealership informed me it's around $800 to replace. About 2 months after the right side started, the left side started again. So, right now I've opted to let them be. I would suggest that you file a complaint with nhtsa.gov and mention that it is dangerous (exhaust emission buildup in the engine compartment potentially causing fire and exhaust making it into the cabin and causing carbon monoxide poisoning). It might never really get that bad, but the only way for Toyota to have a recall and fix the problem is if enough people file complaints. So, tell you friends to file complaints as well.
I had the same problem, I changed the stock exhaust manifolds to the JBA-Tit coated.
When I removed the stock exhaust I didn't see any abvious cracks on both sides, but what I did notice was that the metal gaskets were coroded and pealing on the mating surface.
I used the gaskets that the headers came with, for my install.
Was informed of the same problem, one side only, at about 100K. Hadn't a clue there was anything wrong (a little extra noise gets lost pretty easily on the highway). Did get it fixed because it's not wise to screw around with CO etc.
If my manifolds or gaskets started to leak and I was going to take the time to take them off I would be replacing them with a nice coated set of headers!

I had mine replaced at 90k miles - an O2 sensor also went with this. I came close to getting the JBA's but Toyota actually came through and replaced the manifolds for free.
