1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "'01 Towing at it's limit?", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Anyone towing 6000 pounds or more with your Sequioa? How well does it handle the weight? Plenty of power?
Not 6000 lbs, but i towed quite a bit in the 5000 range.
The sequoia handles the weight just fine. Power was okay but i had the 02 which had the 4 speed auto.
03 and newer have the 5 speed, and better brakes.
I tow a travel trailer that is in the 5500-6000 range a lot. Be sure to have a really good anti sway hitch if it is something like a travel trailer. I got a hensley hitch since I would be doing a lot of towing with it, best purchse yet. It tows just fine, a little sluggish of the line but I still keep up with traffic no problem, even beat the slower oines off the line.
I toed a bobcat & tilt deck 25 foot trailer, Total weight was in the 8500-9000 range on the regular hich, no sway, no weight dist.. Once it was rolling it was OK, but it was working to get going. You kinew the weight was there b ut it handed it quite well for being that much over. I would not suggest doing it though. I was in a bind & needed to - a total of about 70 miles each way, though the city & then highway & back.

It's good to hear some affirmation. I believe the Sequoia can handle it, however some of the people I have talked to think I should sell it. I will be sure to post on here after my trip!
Towed along a 5300lb travel trailer, not plenty of power but it got the job done on the flats. Going up any grade and the tranny downshifted and the engine rev'ed. Seemed to handle it okay and the truck still runs fine today (the last 2 years we pull with a GMC 2500 Sierra). If it is a one time shot from your A to B, you will be fine just take it slow and watch for the big trucks coming from behind you. They seem to enjoy watching the unprepared go through a swaying excercise. We used the Hensley also and ruined many enjoyment excercises.
Cheers.

I travel a lot with my sequoia and trailer. Love my SUV, and one thing I love the best that my SUV is very firm due airbag sustem, and i have 20" wheels and low profile tires. So when I travel with my trailer, and airbag system is set on auto, it seems like my trailer weights nothing (even its very close to 6000lbs). For me i would say sequoia is a good vehicle to tow with.
