Smile Caliper's, Rotors and Pads opinion's for 2003 Sequoia

Hello,

Does anyone have any experience with the following setup? Or let me have your suggestion on some other combination.

2003 Sequoia SR5 2WD

NHT Calipers in Silver
Brembo or DBA Rotors (which one should I get slotted or drilled)

EBC or Fire hawk brakes pads and what material?

Thanks Everyone

I have an 03' sequoia and replaced my front rotors and pads. It is a much improved truck. I used Powerslot rotors and Hawk pads. You will not believe the difference.

Do you have supplier contact info? Out of curiosity, what made you decide to make the switch?

Stop Tech makes drilled and slotted rotors for your rig. I think wheelers offroad sells them.

81toypu: Thanks for the info.

I guess i was hoping the other posters were going to check back here - someone who has done the mod. I do some towing (but have yet to in the Sequoia) so was looking for some insight. The calipers c130 listed just seem to be painted, and while they may look nice - I'm looking for improved stopping power.

Given all the debate about slotted v cross drilled v stock, perhaps the thing to do is to start with some Hawk or other aftermarket pads. I'm certainly not against replacing the rotors, just not sure its money well spent. Apparently no one makes a 'big brake kit' for these rigs.

For a big brake kit, I am pretty sure the TRD kit fits Sequoia. The downside and I do mean downside is last I saw it was over $2k. I like better stopping, but for that money I will press the peddle a little harder .

On previous truck, I have gone with Brembo rotors. They aren't slotted or drilled or anything fancy. Just some heavy think iron (I think iron, maybe another steel) chunk of metal. Found them online for a decent price. For that vehicle I used Akebono pads from tirerack.com. When the time comes, this is likely the set up I will pursue as I have been happy with that set up on my truck.

My $.03 for what it's worth.

Dave

edit - TRD does list the TRD brake kit. I was wrong about the price, they list it at $3k but are selling it at $2700. It does come with bigger rotors and larger (maybe 6 piston?) calipers plus s/s brake lines.

Also, The Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels has a decent selection of rotors and pads for the sequoia. They list the Brembos for $60ish.

If you just go with new pads make sure you turn your rotors so that the new pads aren't trying to work in an old wear pattern. Using drilled and slotted rotors with good pads should increase your stopping power quite a bit. The ability of the rotors to stay cooler and and not fade under heavy load is what makes them work better. Bigger rotors work not just because they have more braking surface area but also because they run cooler.

thanks to you both! Been awhile since I've bought tires from 'the rack' - seems they have expanded their line a bit!

Thanks again

Sorry it took so long. I do not remember where I got it. (Google) I changed my stuff because my rotors were worped. I just thought there must be a better way... There is with this combo. It is really a diff. truck. I have since changed the rear pads with Hawk.HP pads. It just works well. You will not be dissappointed. I used the Powerslot rotors that had been Chriogenicly (spelling??) treated. Really good stuff. I also installed it myself. Very easy.

Stay with the stock config, buy new rotors and pads from your dealership. if calipers are not leaking, leave them be.

I had the SP slotted rotors and SP performance pads from the group buy with Raceshopper.com. Raceshopper has some great customer service, great info, good prices, fast shipping. What I noticed was a definite increase in pedal feel stopping power for same pressure. Downside was that all the slotted (and/or drilled) rotors have the same disclaimer "may make whirring sound under heavy braking". Problem is the trucks are so heavy, all braking is heavy braking! Wife hated the constant sound so I swapped back. Factory rotors had to be turned as they were warped and they are heading that way again. I currently have the Hawk LTS pads with the stock rotors (front and rear) and it is better than stock but not as good as with the slotted rotors.

All that said, read in the towing forums and seriously consider why your upgrading for towing. If it's that heavy and causing issues, trailer brakes are highly recommended but NEED to be adjusted and working correctly. All the trailer companies and associated (as well as forums like rvnet) are very clear. the trailer brakes should stop the trailer not the tow vehicles brakes.

I don't regularly tow heavy - a set of jet skis. But I notice how poor the braking seems to be already on this heavy rig, so an improvement in everyday braking is more what I am looking for - which will just be a bonus for towing.
