Default offroad setup

I have a 2001 Sequoia 4x4 limited that I'm going to be doing some work on.. I take the truck offroad some, and it has done fine with what I am going to throw at it with just a more aggressive set of tires.

I am interested in lifting it a bit and making it look more the offroad part, as opposed to the attractive, but somewhat grocery getter vehicle.

I was hoping to get some input from you guys on here as to the most cost efficient approach to toughen up the look of the truck. I have the relatively wimpy looking side steps, so I'm thinking about some more rugged looking tube steps for the side. I also wouldn't mind lifting it 2.5" - 3.5" and then filling that in with some more offroad oriented tires. Are wheel spacers needed to go with significantly beefier tires? I don't like the stock wheels on my truck, but I'm probably going to hold off on that for the moment, as I want to do this in pieces as my wife and I have a deal concerning my toy expenditures..

I guess my first priority is getting the truck lifted, as my offroad tires are in fine shape for now and I'm not going to junk them.. I'll go bigger when I need to swap out.

Any advice will be appreciated regarding the lift kits.. By the way, I do not want the rear lower than the front of the vehicle. At least level, though I'm not offended by the stock height level with the rear a little bit raised.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Wheelersoffroad.com Sells Good Stuff. Adjustable Coilover Up Front Is The Way To Go. Camburg, donahoe, fabtech. Are The Ones I Would Choose. Bilstien Has There Bts Setup Which Is Good For On Highway And Mild Offraod. The Rear Sits About 2.25-2.50 Inches Higher Then The Front. I Personaly Dont Like The Daystar Spacers. I Have The Camburg With The Tublar A Arm. Love Them. All Coil Over Give Is About 0-2.5 To 0.3.0 Of Lift. There Is Nothing Out There That I Have Found That Is Higher.

thanks a lot for the reply. I am trying to stay as simple as possible and am going on the cheap for now, so I am considering delaying going with the coilovers and using spacers for now.. Thank you for the website in the meantime, and I have added it to my favorites..

The coilovers up front is definitely my longer term goal once I get wheels, tires, tougher step bars on the rig..

Thanks a lot for your help!!

I haven't had any luck finding side steps that will just bolt-on-replacement for the stock steps. At the local dealer, they had a tube style step that the parts man said should work, but he wasn't sure and the guy he needed to ask wasn't there at that time so I don't know for sure yet.
A buddy told me that you can get a custom rocker guard/step made for about the same price as buying tube steps. You might want to consider that. They'll be a lot stronger and better protection. Other guys on this forum have completely removed their steps for off roading (I like this idea and look, but my wife needs the step(s)).
I've heard Revtek makes 1 to 2" lift spacers, as well as Daystar.

Yeah.. Revtek does make a spacer set too, in metal as opposed to the daystar kit which is polyurethane or whatever. I'm not too concerned about the spacer longevity, though it looks like daystar does offer a lifetime guaranty now.. I will eventually be going to front coilovers and rear bilsteins or something, but I just don't want to drop the extra coin right now.. I just bought a new motorcycle, and upgrades another, so I'm trying to try out the lifted sequoia on the cheap.. The kit and a coil spring compressor for now, and we'll see how she looks..

Thanks for the response, and if I happen to see any decent tube bar options, I'll let you know.. I know Manik has one, but I don't have a clue about the Manik quality.. I was something that not only looks more rugged, but does provide some protection as well..

if you go with the spacers go with daystar. while you got the shock out upgrade it to bilstien shocks in. this will make it ride like butter.

Supralsx.. The billstein BTS system will not raise the truck at all on its own, will it? I was a little confused by your prior post. I'm assuming that if I'm going a little cheaper, I'd use the spacers AND the bilstein setup, right?

Thanks again for your help.

well, i actualy work for summitracing and i've done resaerch and the bts will raise it up about 1.25 to 2 inchs. bilstien also has a shock that has three position clips to raise the spring perch. i think that would be a lil sketch though becuase all it is a snap ring. if you can pm the link were you found info on that bts system i would like to read it. only becuase i sell them my customers all day... thanks

I actually am not sure where I read about the bts system. It did not say one way or the other about whether it increased height, which led to my confusion.. I'll see if I can come up with where I was looking into the setup and I'll PM it to you. Thanks for the info.

Bilstein has a adjustable shock in their 5100 series that raises the front end 2" to level out the sequoia. They claim you can run a 285/70/17 tire. You can get shocks all around for 322.00 on e-bay. The front shock is a BE5-6929-HO.
