Sludge comes from the impurities, not the additives. (thats probably what you meant to say anyway)

On top of it - oil change cost me no more then $14 each time - big deal

and by the way i did work on BMW(s) a lot, so i know how much sludge those cars have, when you open your engine up (due to rare oil changes), and i still owe 2-740iLs
Maybe I wasn’t clear the point is, I put 275,000 miles on my BMW WITH conventional oil, guess what - no sludge. Neither did I have any engine wear to speak of. The reason it got torn down was to punch it out and build it up. I have used Syn oil ever since.. [I still have the original camshaft in my garage with no measurable wear]

I am not in the market for a new vehicle, or a hybrid. I do what I can to help the environment given my needs and circumstances. I need a 4wd vehicle that can tow. And I don't buy new. Never have. And I am not in the market for used vehicle. Perhaps a hybrid will be in the cards the next time I buy.

However, I am in the market for oil changes. I have 2 vehicles that need to be maintained. Therefore, I do aid the environment by not throwing away perfectly good oil (your words).

The problem concerning oil changes and many other consumer waste habits is that we have abundant wealth (compared to the rest of the world) and we waste. The oil change doesn't cost enough to make you care about the environment or to even change your oil at manufacturer's (7000 - 9000 miles) recommended intervals, not even taking into consideration that your using syn oil.

well, see in my opinion when it comes to synt. oil or regular oil - I would say stick with regular oil, cause its cheaper (but change it more often - like me).

I know, that we have to be nice to our enviroment, but hey, look at cars thats on a road 9-12 mpg of gas every day, nice for our enviroment? What about how many SUVs, SUTs, Trucks are used for every day driving - then why not advertize a diesel MB diesel thats getting 37mpg? See oil, its left overs from gas manufacturers so tons of it available, and when you recycle it after usage - obiously whats good, will make it back to market, whats not good, most likely will be used in heating someones house or who knows?

That is why BMW (4.4 litre) is good for long oil changes mine takes 8-9 quarts of oil, but toyotas take a lot less amount of oil for a bigger engine (4.7 litre), that is why i believe that it needs more frequent oil change then a BMW, on the other hand did you see how much diesel SUVs take oil? - couple of gallons - that is why they last lots of miles before an oil change. On top of that, in my opinion, I rather change with basic oil 10w30 every 3,000 to 4,000 miles, and be safe, then do an oil change every 7,000 like toyota manual says and take a chance/posibily of bad engine damage (happened to me on 1998 Jetta VR6). I've bought it used with 40k miles at 68k miles had to replace tons of parts on a bottom end due to lack of oil changes by previous owner.

I know that every one has their own opinion, that is why i respect yours, and i believe if you are happy about oil changes between 8,000 to 9,000 miles, then more power to you! When someone ask me what i think, will say again, its better put basic oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles, then synt. oil every 8,000 to 9,000 miles.

Thanks for sharing.
