1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "# of qts you use to fill w/doing oil change", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Just changed the oil/filter in my '02 and am up to 7qts, stick still shows 1 quart low. I've searched and looked through a few threads about this problem. Not sure there is a definite answer as to just fill it to full or keep it at the 6.5 qts per owners manual.
Soo, what's your story? How many quarts does it take to fill up your rig when doing a oil/filter change?

2001 Toyota Tundra SR5 4x4 Supercharged w/ lots of miles on it!
Changed my oil yesterday and 6.5 quarts got it up 2/3's between safe zone. Remember, the owners manual says to run the truck up to "operating temp" then wait a few minutes after turning off engine to check level. Also, the manual does not say to fill all the way to the top fill line, only over the lower area of the low mark, about halfway to 2/3's.
Thanks! While it's been to operating temp, I waited overnight to check it. I can't that would make a difference, but who knows! I didn't catch the part in the manual about filling to the top mark.
I did talk with the Toyota parts dude today, and he said there was a part number change - but didn't know why (and didn't know the length) He has on in stock, so I thought i would head over there and compare. I'll report back - but won't be for a few days.

checked at the dealership today - the new part number dip stick is .. .. the same length as the old one. .. ..
So hard to say where to go. I'm going to add another half a quart in the morning and see where that takes me. I guess it's possible that the 5 quart jug of Moble1 had only 4 quarts or something .. .

I guess they make both. I 'd already pitched the 5qt container and just have the 4 qt bottle that I used to supplement the 5qt.
I bought the containers from different retailers, however and having the same thought as you - I went back to Wally World and sure enough, their Mobil 1 is sold in 5qt bottles. The 4qt container I already had in my garage and came from an auto parts store.
I guess there is some variance with oil fill-up. Some of the Tundra's take 8 (according to some old threads on this issue) and we have some (small) variance on this thread as well. I just don't want to over fill it.

yea i did Andy - they are the same - we can't figure out that has changed. HOWEVER .. ..
It turns out all is for nought. Before adding any more oil, I went back to the dealership today to try the dipstick they had - I notice some friction in the dipstick tube and wondered if oil was being scraped off the stick when I removed it, and wondered if the newer dipstick was thinner.
The parts guy came out with me, and I had him insert my dipstick so he could feel the resistance - and .. .. he pulls it out and it shows full. WTF .. .. I try it and come up a qt low. I ask him to do it again, and .. .. this entire time I have not been pushing the stick all the way down
So thanks to all who replied! The Toyota stick is different from any I have had (no 'hood' to push onto the tube). When I was inserting the dipstick, I was stopping when the 0-ring was into the tube and combined with the resistance, I thought I was done. >What an IDIOT< My apologies to all and thanks for your replies!
