Default Aftermarket DVD

Hi all-

I am planning on having an aftermarket overhead DVD system installed after taking delivery of an '08 Limited. Has anyone else had this done yet? If so, were there any problems?
Also, does anyone have recommendations on a particular DVD system? I'm looking at a Jensen model MVB85A from Circuit City.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Mike

My thought is to get one of these dual headrest systems.
Car Video and LCD Monitors & Screens and Headrest Monitors and 7 Inches and Bigger at Sonic Electronix

Then you get two screens, they are more at eye level, etc. I have one on order and will report back how it goes.

I like the idea of headrest systems. The only problem with that on my end is 3 kids will be watching it, with 1 or 2 of them in the 3rd row. The overhead style is more in line of what we need.

That is probably true -- a kid in the 3rd row could not see the headrests. I never thought of that. I still like this for myself though. The Mercedes GL450 does it in the headrests and it looked really cool. My wife rides in the 2nd row next to two children. I asked my three year old if he wanted one screen in the ceiling like our minivan, or two screens on the headrests. He said he wanted two screens -- one for him, and one for mommy -- but wants mommy's screen to have the same show as his screen. So I am getting just one DVD drive that puts the same show on both headrests.

We have the headrest setup in our 05 Double Cab Tundra. One other benefit here is that each kid can watch something different as well. Just a thought...

Ours is the Invision system, and it has worked well.

Isn't it amazing how times have changed? When I was little (30 years ago), my family had a brown '75 Chrysler Newport with no air conditioning and VHS wasn't even around yet. Fast forward to today, kids sit in air-conditioned cars with leather seats holding a remote to control a DVD system! Now that's progress!

How do the Invision products look for pricing?

I am planning the same and i will go with Alpine PKG RSE2 overhead system. 10.2 inch screen. all in one system. can buy from ebay for around 550$. i previously had RSE1 on my van and it worked without a hiccup for 2 yrs. The Apline system is about 12.1 inch long and same width, 2.5 inch thick. It will install low profile on the headliner pretty much where the stock system would have been installed. I can get it installed for 80$ at my local audio video shop but i will spend around 120-150$ and get it installed from a well known installer who is much familiar with new tundras and other toyota vehicles.

I have the Kenwood DNX 7100 installed with the Alpine PKG RSE2 and 2 SAVV 7" monitors. The HU allows the front to watch or listen to something completely separate from the 2nd and 3rd rows. Of note, the Alpine flip down base had to be grinded down so the screws would mount properly. If you check the headliner above the 2nd row, it is flimsy, my installer backed and support the mount with 1,4" plastic sheets.

Molson,

I have an '04 but I have the headrest monitors. One of my closest friends owns an electronics store & did it for me. He has 3 kids & the same problem. He put headrest units in the 2nd row & an overhead in the 3rd row. It looks great. As far as monitors & dvd's go, check out my pics. It's been awesome.

2 things you want to consider: I did not run the AV through my audio system, because I never wanted to hear what's on there. Second, make sure he puts in at least 1, if not 2 game ports (AV jacks). My son plays his Gamecube & my daughter watches a movie. This is a must-have for peaceful driving on the long runs.

In my buddy's car, he also has 3 DVD players...no arguing. Apparently it's easy to set it up so that all can run independently.

Let us know what you decide.

I am planning on installing RSE2 on my 08 Seq. Can you elaborate a little more on the issues you had with the head liner. I did not get what you mean by grinding the base. Where did you put the base plate i.e behind the liner or on top of it. Where the base plate was mounted? i.e cross beams?

Your help will be appreciated.

The base plate is rather deep, the screws the installer were using were too short, they were worried about using screws that were too long that may come in contact with the moonroof shade. It was attached to a metal brace that sits between the head liner and sunshade. Plastic sheets were added for a better support allowing the screws to grab on to more than just the metal plate.

DC Slate,

Did your PKG RSE2 coverd the center dome light or you were able install it b/w overhead console and dome light? The power cable that came with RSE2 is very short. How you routed your power and AV cable to headunit? (B pillar?)
