1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "New Owner Gas Mileage Question.", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I'm new here and this is my first SUV so cut me a little slack. A month ago I purchased a 2005 Limited 2WD Sequoia. The vehicle has 31k miles on it. So far I've been getting around 250 miles to a tank. When I fill up it takes 22 gallons of gas, which is an abysmal 11.3 miles per gallon. I drive until the gas light comes on and then I drive a little further. Then I "fill up" and it has yet to be over 22 gallons. I live in Atlanta and therefore most of my driving up until this point has been city driving to and from work. Not exactly the best baseline for comparison but this is getting expensive quick.
Any help would be appreciated. For example, I've read that underinflated tires can contribute to worse gas mileage. What PSI are you guys running on your Sequoias?
I drive city a lot when I go to/from work and I get around 14MPG and around 330 miles to a tank. On the highway I have gotten 19 but usually it hovers around 18 and around 400 a little over to a tank. I run 32PSI in all 4 tires.
V8's don't like city traffic whether its in a car of a big hulking truck/SUV. They are not gas friendly in the least, which I why I have a commuter car which gets 24city and 32 highway.

Usually about 22-24 the fuel warning light is definitely early on purpose. I have ran it to put in 25 gallons before and I ended up getting like 360 miles on a tank.

I average around 15-16mpg here in the winter with mine. 50/50 hwy/city

I own a 2001 4x4 Limited and get roughly 13mpg in urban driving and 18mpg on the highway. I usually put 22 gallons in the tank.
As for the tires, I run 32~35 PSI all the way around.
Don't feel too bad about the gas mileage. I have two co-workers, one drives a fairly new Tahoe and the other a late 90's v-8 Explorer, and both report averaging 11~13mpg on the highway!

Interesting. I live at 8000' in the rockies and have been getting about 18 mpg. I've heard the lack of city driving and thin air
contribute to the better gas mileage here.
I also have an 07 subaru legacy that I used to average 25 mpg back
in Dallas, now average 34 .
BTW how much did you pay for the Sequoia? Nice ride!
Just got mine last month @78k for $17k.

Wow, that's a substantial difference on both vehicles so I'm sure you're saving quite a bit of $ compared to most of us. I didn't realize that altitude could improve mileage like that. I thought that most mileage fluctuations with members here had mostly to do with gas additives/blends. I get similar mileage as Charlie S.

Well I think you are correct.
We have non ethanol fuel at our local gas station, so I believe that helps.
Very few street lights also.
I should note that I have used 4wd ALOT as we have been burried in snow since I purchased it.
I think to keep the fuel - air mixture the same the computer leans the mix to compensate for less air. This would result in lower hp too, of course.
This combined with less drag from thinner air may be the reason.
Anyhow the Sequoia is awesome up here. Between it and the legacy we have no problem getting around.
