1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "Thinking of a 01 Sequoia...Please help", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I am looking at a 2001 Saquoia Limited on Thursday. It is in beautiful condition but has 104,000 miles and they are asking $15,500. A friend borrowed it from the dealership last weekend and drove it about 600 miles. He has had 3 gen 1's and he says this drives just as good as the ones he had with under 30K on them. The interior looks brand new and the engine could be eaten off of. What should I offer?? What should I ask them as far as maintence?? Is there anything I should be worried about?? Is the in-town mileage going to be in the 13-15 range?? I thank you for any help you can give.

1) $15,500 seems a bit sporty for a '01 with over 100K miles...is it a 4x4? Here are some prices I just pulled from a local dealer that specializes in used Toyota vehicles:
- '03 Limited 4x4, 72K miles, $18,675
- '03 SR5 4x2 (leather), 44K miles, $16,975
- '04 SR5 4x2 (leather), 58K miles, $17,675
He doesn't have any older than '03 but based on his prices, I would think the one you are looking at should be more like $12,500.
2) Make sure the timing belt has been replaced and the front ball joint recall has been performed.
3) Honestly, I have a '05 SR5 4x4 and in-town mileage is more like 12-14. Hwy mileage (driving 75-80) is 16-17.
It's your call but regardless of how good the vehicle looks, 100K is one of those negative thresholds in the used car market. Most mainline dealers will not even keep a vehicle on their lot that has much over 75K on the clock. It must be a very nice unit.
I still think that's top-dollar for a '01. Do a nationwide search on Autotrader.com and you can find plenty of comp prices.
the three most important things are:
has it been damaged in a collision?
has the oil been changed a lot?
does it have salt damage?
mileage means nothing. maintenance means everything. yspert
Mileage DOES mean something when it comes to price, regardless of condition. Though I agree that if this Sequoia has been properly maintained, 104K is nothing to be worried about.
$3.50/Gallon gas means something too. SUV's aren't "flying" off the lots right now.
Also remember that it will need a timing belt and water pump if it hasn't been done. I think 15,500 would be OK IF it had the timing belt replaced. You may want to take that into consideration when making an offer.
I am selling my '01 Sequoia and the funny thing is that the dealer will only offer you wholesale price (about $10,500). Then they turn around after doing very little work and put in on their lot for $15,000 to $16,000. If you are interested, I am selling my '01 Sequoia SR5 4WD with only 59,075 miles on it for $13,500. The truck has been serviced exclusively by a buddy who works as a mechanic at the local Toyota Dealer. I just paid over $800 for the 60k service plus new battery, new timing belt, and other services. I could send you photos if you like.
Thinking of selling my 02 Limited in awesme shape and under 60,000 miles. People cant tell if it's an 07 or an 02. Looks great. Fully loaded. I haven't thought this thru 100% yet, but contact me if interested.
I love this truck, but I can go smaller and save on gas...
I bought my 01 Limited last year w/105K for $13K out the door. The price for the one you are looking at is waaaaay outta line! I considered trading mine in on a newer one a few months ago and they wanted to give me $8500 on trade!
A timing belt/water pump change is gonna cost in the $600 to $800 range. Currently I have just under 150k and it has been almost flawless! Only stuff I have fixed so far have been a busted rear latch, steering rack bushings, speakers and brakes.
I average about 14 mpg around town and about 17 mpg on the highway.
Overall it's an awesome rig.....tows great, rides great and is an excellent vehicle.

Good to hear. For the most part, these trucks are wonderfully built. I have 125k on mine and there isn't even as much as a single rattle, though I've gone through the usual electronic bs in a few cases.

This is an easy one. I just had 4 new tires mounted, balanced and aligned on the wife's 2001 sequoia today. It has 112K miles and is going strong. For Christmas I put new bilsten HD shocks on along with Brembo front rotors and pads and had a remote start/alarm combo installed as well. I wouldn't have put this kind of money into our 7 year old vehicle if I thought it wouldn't last another 4 years MINIMUM. If the vehicle is properly maintained it should run for a very long time.
Check to see if the dealership can pull the service records and get that price down a bunch! I'd really consider looking into one of the private sales from someone on this forum with a newer model and a better price if I were you. Why pay the dealership markup on a used vehicle in this market? The people on this forum won't be able to sell their vehicles on the private market right now and this is definitely a buyers market for large SUV's. Trade in values on large SUV's have tanked in the last 6 months, ask any dealer.
