Default Another towing question, Big boat!

I know there are a ton of towing posts so please forgive me....

I have a 24.5 ft bayliner cruiser, 5,600 lbs dry, add trailer (dual axle, surge brakes) fuel, gear etc and its probably about 7 to 7,200 lbs. I just sold my Chevy crew cab duramax diesel, 13,000 lb tow capacity that pulled the boat like it wasnt even there.

I'm looking at a Tundra or Sequoia, 02 to 05, i really want the seq for various reasons.

I only tow the boat to nearby lake 20 mins away on summer weekends and to the river 1 hr away 2 or 3 times a year. If i get the sequoia i plan on finding one with tow package for the oil cooler, adding air bag rear susp. tranny temp gauge, equalizer hitch.

Realising i'm above the reccomended tow capacity, it sounds like the Sequoia can handle it from what i've read, and my relatively short trips, does anyone have any advice or further reccomendations?

Thanks!

Pete

I wouldn't recommend it. That is over 1000lbs of it's towing capacity.. if you lose control on the highway, well I shouldn't have to tell you what could happen. I just upgraded to the new Tundra cause I was pulling my 30ft travel trailer at 5000lbs dry and near 6100 loaded along with passengers. It pulled it ,I only went 2 hrs away. But I was always leary,, and felt uncomfortable pushing it.. especially the tongue weight, Had equalizer and mine has tow pkg, etc.. but.. Now this summer with the new Tundra , I will be able to relax while driving..
Just my 2 cents ,, Good luck , hope someone else can help you out also..

7000lbs, I would recomend crewmax 07-08 tundra (since your boat is long and heavy)
I have 2006 sequoia limited with towing package and toyota factory air bag system. I love that set up, but I think your boat with trailer is a bit too much for 02-06 sequoia. Its possible to tow it, but like BigDaddyKool says, its kind of scary.

Welcome to the forum!

I'm sure some people will tell you you can since you're not going too far and others will say you shouldn't.

I'm sure your truck can do it... you're not THAT far off with the Sequoia's tow rating at 6500 lbs for 2wd or 6200 for 4wd... though if you are in Minnesota I would think you'd want 4wd. If you're not going that far too... hmm.

So it looks like i might be overdoing it with the Sequoia, thats a bummer, buying the new Tundra isnt an option for me unfortunately.

The only other SUV i can find that would fit the bill is the Nissan Armada with a 9,000lb capacity but they are just sooo ugly!! The Titan cre-cab might work and is in my price range, they seem quite a bit cheaper than the Tundra, the only Tundras i can find are the earlier lower power models and mostly just the extended cab.

Anyone have any suggestions?

By the way, the reason i got rid of the duramax is it was simply too big, it wouldnt fit in any of the garages i have to park in at work and diesel is $4.50 a gallon

The Armada is a beast of an SUV. I've heard or some reliability and quality problems with it but it can def haul a lot, and is quick off the line and should get similar gas mileage to the Sequoia.

No way.........I had an '01 Sequoia and currently have an 06 Tundra DoubleCab 4WD, both of which I've pulled my 25 ft travel trailer (4500 lbs) with. That boat/trailer is real long-ish for the Sequoia's relatively short wheelbase, I think, though you might be OK on short distances you listed.

But, the kicker here is the weight. You're WAY overweight on that rig........I think you're a lot closer to 8,000 lbs than 7,000 , and I honestly don't think there's a whole lot of "margin" built into the 1st Gen trucks.......

Yep, as much as i wanted to be driving a Sequoia as it fitted the rest of my life so well i decided it wasnt worth the risk of compromising the safety of my family when towing the boat.
That said, i went out last weekend and found a very nice 04 Nissan Titan crew cab, 9,200lb tow capacity, allready has the upgraded tow package and was loaded with every option Nissan had when it was built.
So far we love it, hopefully this weekend if the weather behaves we'll take the boat out.

So thats probably the end of my participation in the toyota forum, at least for a while, till we get a boat thats too big to tow and has to be docked..... there i go dreaming again!!

Thanks for everyones advice.

PS What did we ever do before forums like this??
