1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "Was this caused by a ball joint failure?", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I saw this Sequoia ('01-'04) at the dealership over the weekend. It was left in plain view next to the sales floor. It's bad enough that they didn't even bother to support the front with a jack or jack stand but they left it out for prospective Toyota buyers to see.
I don't think it's a balljoint failure. More of an install failure. From what I've read from others members that had their ball joint fail was the 4 mounting bolts breaking or the actuall ball joint breaking. From the looks of the pic, the ball joint nut came off. Either from no cotter pin or someone forgot to tighten the nut.
It's a possibility this dealership did the ball joint recall on this sequoia and if that's the case, the mechanic who worked on it is going to get an ear full.
If you look at the ball joint housing, it is black and not dirty. This is a new ball joint and was IMPROPERLY installed, just like DYOGIM and TMS2U said. The tech forgot to tighten it and/or left the cotter pin out.
When ball joints fail, the ball and socket part is where the problem is.
