Default Toyota 4-pin to 7-pin adapter ???

Hello, I'm going to install a brake controller and have the tow package. But it doesn't have a true 7 pin harness, just and adapter that connects to the 4 pin. I was told that wouldn't work? Kind of confused. Anyone with a brake controller give me some insight?

First off what kind of brake controller do you have that you are trying to install? Unless I'm completely missing the boat the brake controller mounts inside your vehicle and if it's like my '03 the harness connector is behind the kick panel by the driver's left foot. Most modern brake controlers will have several harnesses to accomidate many makes and models.

I installed a Prodigy brake controller on this vehicle a couple of years ago and it was a great upgrade followed by rear airbags this spring. Another lead pipe winner. The brake controller was a simple plug-n-play affair as I bought the appropriate adapter for my vehicle from Prodigy rather than splicing wires.

Are you sure you have the tow package and not just an aftermarket hitch and wiring? I also have an 04 with a factory hitch and 7-pin plug. Just to the left of the spare tire there should be two gray connectors that go straight to the trailer harness. If your harness has only four wires, you only have light control. There wouldn't be any kind of adapter that would work with the factory's pre-wiring for the brake controller. If you do have those two connectors, you probably only need the factory harness from your local dealer.
