Do-It-Yourself Aftermarket bang for the buck??????

First out I would like to say that this is a great forum. I just picked up a used 2004 SR5 Sequoia with 86,000mi.

I have a few Questions about what aftermarket parts to buy to get a little better fuel eco + get a few more ponies out of it.
What have you folks done that has made a noticeable difference and what would you recommend from your experiences?

Every thing is stock from my initial inspection. I just installed the remote start/ alarm this past weekend and tested the switch for the rear window. I needed the door trigger from the rear DCM. When I took off the rear door panel to expose the DCM, I tried the window switch again and it didn't click over any relays. Has anyone had a problem with the door control module or the motor? I didnt have time to test the motor yet.

Also about the timing belt and the water pump, what interval due you recommend replacement?

Dustin

I had my water pump and timing belt replaced at the same time at 97K. That was about a $700 from toyota. The dealer will usually tell you to replace the both of them together. Mine just happened to be leaking so I went ahead and replaced it.

keep foot out of pedal, replace air filter when needed to with only factory toyota filter, run fuel injector cleaner, clean throttle body and butterfly, mass air flow sensor and air intake every year. My dad never cleaned the tundras and at 120k I cleaned it for the first time. I kept my foot out of the pedal after I cleaned it and i picked up literally 2 mpg better. from 14-16.5 mpg. But if i run it hard i get about 15.3 mpg. The throttle body cleaner, fuel injector cleaner, and mass airflow sensor cleaner you can pick up at any auto parts store even Wal-Mart. I used Vavoline throttle body cleaner, Gum-Out fuel injector cleaner.

Don't replace the air filter with an aftermarket brand. sometimes they aftermarket brand, aka: fram purolater, do not fit as well as the factory air filter. This happened to my moms 02 nissan causing there to be slight gap on the intake box. If you want, you can purchase a cold air intake but, you'll lose a little bit of low end torque. I purchased a K&N FIPK intake used for $100. I'll admit that I did lose a little bid of low end torque but did gain a little bit of top end but not much. Also, DO NOT PURCHASE A THROTTLE BODY SPACER. My dad bought one of these for the truck and I took that piece of junk off and sold it to some idiot. Its a waste of money and all it does it make a whistling sound.

If you wanted better fuel economy, you should have bought a Prius.

While there are a few things you can do to increase overall horsepower/torque (new headers and exhaust, for example), backing off the lead foot is about the only way to increase your mpg that will make a noticable difference.

I bought some NGK spark plugs, change the fuel filter and just kept my tires all 40 psi around. I used Valvoline Semi Synthetic 5-30 on mine.

Just my 2 cents worth, I run Mobile 1 full syn in both of my motorcycles my Tundra and my Benz. I have talked with the so called oil formulation experts, and they say syn blend is a waste of $$$.
