Post Check Engine Light?

I took my 2001 Sequoia to the dealer to get an estimate to fix my rear hatch handle {2nd time since I've owned the truck}. I was quoted a price that was several hundred dollars more than the last time I had this problem fixed 2 years ago. Needless to say I was not too happy and told the dealer so - Also informed him I would have someone else fix the handle. Picked up my truck and 5 miles from the dealership I got a check engine light {go figure}. Called Auto Zone and they told me they could not do the check but I could use their code reader. I have not used a code reader before so my question is where do I plug the code reader in - and are there any special procedures to be followed? Thanks for the help

Code reader is easy to use. There is a plug on drivers side (close to gas pedal) near center console. All you do is plug that reader, turn your ignition into on position, and wait untill its ready to read code(s) (sometimes you have to press button to read code). It is very easy to do.

Most independent service centers will read the code for you.If you are lucky,it might be something as simple as the gas cap.If you are handy at all with tools, download the instructions,go to ebay, buy the handle and replace it yourself.I had never replaced one until last week, needed a couple of tools and just over an hour to take it apart, replace it and put it back together. And the handle was $39.99 plus $6 bucks shipping from garrickwholesale760. Good luck.
