Default Re: Transmission thunk....not driveshaft

Hi I am new to this forum and wanted to share my experience with the Thunk. I have 05 sequoias and I have experience the thunk, I took it to the dealer and they said it’s a known issue with the Sequoia but not a recall item. When I bring my sequoia in for oil change I explain the Thunk and they repack grease in the drive shaft which helped however the problem soon came back so I was having grease put in my drive shaft every 5K. I finally spoke to the Service manager and explained what was happening and she said this was not normal so she suggested doing complete drive shaft maintenance. The cost about $200.00 but it was no cost to me because of re-recurring issue. They pulled the drive shaft off cleaned it checked and replace any cracked seals and packed it with what they call a "special Grease" they would not tell me what kind of grease. When I drove away from the dealer it felt brand new and the thunk has not come back.

Amazing - I went to my local garage this afternoon to ask them to shed some light - the tech looked for the dipstick, didn't find it () and went to AllData to look up the specifics. I saw some of the diagrams that are in OPER.pdf, above.

Thanks very much for the information.

Hi, I should have mentioned my sequoia is a 05 4WD sounds like a different thunk issue. Is this recall only for 2WD?

Yes, it's only for 2wd's.
We have also found "U" joints that were tight and when felt with your hands, they feel "NOTCHY". They are smooth when moving and then there is a small hard spot in their movement, but this is not a Toyota fix, just what we have found too. We replace the "U" joint, usually it is the rear most joint. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. We also clean the part of the shaft with the splines and remove any rust or debris and grease the splines with a teflon grease, this helps too.
