I tried a search on the forums and didnt see anything specifc so wanted to see if anyone can point me in the right direction.
I have a 2001 sequoia limited with the JBL stereo system. Was never all that impressed with the audio to begin with but since this was a beater it didnt matter.
Recent the front passenger door speaker blew out and is making HIDEOUS noises. I am not a car audio person but I believe that is the kicker?
So i basically want the cheapest and easiest method to replacing the speaker. Should I plan on replacing both the front door speakers? Is there anything out there that is plug and play?
Are there installation instructions floating around?
Mine are blown out as well, prepare to replace your entire system, head unit as well as speakers. The information I received is that the factory speakers have the amps attached attached to the speakers instead of in the head unit. I have not been able to find replacement speakers with amps built into the speaker. If you simply replace the speakers, your system won't work properly since there is no amp in the head unit and you probably won't be able to find speakers w/amps at your local store. Good luck finding some replacement factory speakers that are not blown. I have been driving around with the sound cmopletely faded to the rear speakers to get rid of the rattle in BOTH blown front speakers.

I thought the JBL system had a seperate amp, apart from the head unit, that fed all speakers. An amp at each speaker; that's hard to fathom. But I could be wrong. Anybody?

that is not true.
sequoia has separate amp... so go ahead and buy a speaker adapters and replace speaker or go on car-pars.com and look for radio/stereo part, and get speakers from 2006 sequoia

So i found a set on crutchfield that suppossedly fit the sequoia. THey are a set of pioneers. They are 160 with free shipping and installation gear/guide.
I found the same speakers on a different site for about 90. My question is are there installation guides floating around out there such that i can go with the cheaper site?
I dont know installation well enough to do without instructions but paying an extra 70 bucks just for instructions seems like a strecth.....thoughts?
I see a trend here.....my fronts went out within a few months of each other. I removed the door panel and saw it is the foam surround that has deteriorated, I put silicone on one as a temporary solution to the drivers side. That was a few months ago and it has lasted, but now the passenger side went out. So long story short they need replacing, I hope the ones in my Avalon are better quality.
I have had both sides go over the last few years. In each case, the speaker separated right along the perimeter. I used silicone adhesive to re-secure it. Took a few minutes and no cost and sounds the same. Still fine today. However, if you want to upgrade, this is a good excuse to do it.
So i finally got around to upgrading the speakers. All in all it was definitely some work but the end result was great.
First, as many others have said there is no speaker that I have found that will fit in the stock case. I ended up purchasing the Infinity 6022i at Best Buy for $94.
I then took off the door panel and removed the speakers. You will notice a large plastic mount that the speaker itself is directly screwed into. The Inifinity speakers come with a couple different mouting brackets but at best they only line up with one of the original screw holes.
I proceeded to cut the original speakers out and then went to Home Depot and got some 1/4inch wood. Using the original speakers as an outline I cut a circular piece of wood to mount the new speakers. Once I had the frame I used the new speakers as a guide to cut a whole in the wood. Dropped the new speaker in. Measured the screw holes and drilled a hole. I first mounted the new speakers to the wood and then attached the wood to the original speaker mount in the door.
I reattached the wires (green was pos and black was neg). Everything fit great and sounds even better.
All in all a relatively easy job as long as you have the right tools.
If anyone with a faulty speaker is not willing to create the custom mount I do have one perfectly good speaker for sale. As I replaced both the driver and passenger door speakers I have one functioning speaker available.
Stinger44:
So the EXTRA 1/4" wood ring was on top of the original mount ?? Or do you mean in the same palce as the original speaker?
I haven't done this (yet) so I'm most interested.
I"m wondering if the extra 1/4" thickness causes reassemby issues at all?
Thanks.
Boston Acoustics SX60s (component speakers) fit just fine in the front doors using existing plastic speaker housings with factory speaker components ripped out. There are a couple of trim cuts that need to be made on the new BA speaker mounting tabs but it's a piece of cake.
Alternatively BA SX65's (coaxial equivalent of SX60) could be used in the front doors. But these cheaper speakers have the tweeter sticking out far enough from the center to hit the door grille and so require 3 notched cuts in the OEM speaker housing where the speaker screw hole tabs go in order to recess them in farther to miss the grilles.
I am trying to get there, but I feel like an idiot. I have the same "blown" speaker problem on my front speakers. I followed the directions available and successfully took of the door panel. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to take that *#^$% black wire-connector off the speaker. It looks like there are little clasps on each side of the connector that I can ply off and fold down, but pulling still does not work. This is the "L" shapped connector with the wires going in it. Anyone have any idea what to do?! Please?!?
