Default Tips on replacing door speakers?

Hey guys,

My 2004 SR5 Sequoia has a couple of blown speakers (low/mid on the front doors) that I would like to replace. I'm tired of throwing myself at the mercy of Best Buy - is this something I can do myself?

I've never taken off a door panel before and don't want to Tim Taylor this job - but I am willing to spend a few hours if it means saving some money.

Any recommendations? Thanks for the help!

Default Tips on replacing door speakers?

Hey guys,

Any advice on replacing blown front door speakers (mid/low) on my 2004 SR5 Sequoia?

I've never done it before but am willing to spend a few hours to avoid forking over more money to the Best Buys of the world....(no offense).

Any recommendations on reasonably priced replacements, for that matter? No audiophile here, just don't like blown speakers!

Thank you for your help and recommendations!

Hey Daryl, speaker installation is a breeze but you need to make sure you get the right components, wire harnesses, tools, and go slow! THere is a special tool that will help with the retaining clips. The tool can be squeezed between the door frame and the panel, and then gently pryed so the clip pops out. Also you can turn the tool around and pry off your window handle if you have one. Once you have the panel off, you unscrew the old speaker and slip off the old wiring harness. Purchase wiring harness adapters from Crutchfield.com so this way you do not cut your factory wiring. These harnesses make it a very simple job and you don't risk screwing something up. Attach the new speaker, screw it in and pop your door panel back on.

The important thing to know is how many screws and clips each door panel has. DO NOT pull on your door panel too hard if you do not know for sure there are no screws or other wires still connected. You can easily break your panel or rip out the wiring for your automatic windows.

Crutchfield.com has a great customer support section, and if you order from them, they may even throw in an installation guide for your car making it very easy. Those guys are pros so check out the site.

Hope this helps!

In case you're still out there. My right speaker was rattling something fierce. After searching the net I ended up removing the speaker and gluing the cone back to the foam surround with super glue. I then ran a bead of flexible silicone around the perimeter where the foam meets the speaker frame AND where it meets the cone. I re-installed it and let it cure several days. Sounds like new, even at high volume. Once I figured out how to gain access to the speaker it went back together in minutes. Zero dollars.

I had the same problem with both front speakers and since I have the JBL system replacing the speaker isn't an easy task. Like you I used a flexible glue to reconnect the cone back to the speaker ring. Works great!

I was in the same boat and decided to buy replacement foam. I will be doing the work this weekend. It looks easy enough and the new foam cost $35 (including the shipping).
