Default Same old VSC problem or something else?

My '04 Sequoia had the normal vsc issues - vsc lights coming off & on, parking brake light coming off & on, etc. I took it to my dealer, they 'reset' the computer, and it has not acted up since (a few months ago). Of course, they recommended the four $ figure replacement unit, but stated if it was reset and did not act up, no worries.

Today I went to put it in 4wd, and when I pushed the button, the 4 wheel green lights illuminated, but the orange center light just kept flashing. It never really engaged into 4wd. Pushing the button again to come out of 4wd, the green wheel lights turned off, but the orange center continued to flash.

So I disconnected the negative at the battery to reset everything, left it for about 10 minutes. To my surprise, the orange light was still flashing when the truck was started again. It will not turn off.

Is this an electronic problem associated with the vsc, or something else entirely? Has anyone tried one of these reman computers? Toyota ecm repair: Rebuilt and remanufactured ecm, ecu engine computers

Thanks for any help.

Were you stopped or moving when trying to shift into 4wd? It won't shift properly unless you are moving. The VSC computer is not the same as the transmission/transfer case/engine control system.

Thanks for the note back. Yes, I was moving. I really did not need the 4wd, was just dropping it in to keep everything lubed (which I try to do for 20 miles or so every month). Probably 5 miles an hour. I know sometimes I needed to accelerate/decelerate a little to get it to grab - but now it does not do anything. I tried reverse, too.

I figured it was not the vsc, but was not sure. I have the 100k warranty on the powertrain. Worth taking it in, or will they just tell me it's the electronic part of the actuator and it's on me?

Is there any home remedy I can do for it? Thanks.

The manual says to check the fuse first. Apparently there's a 4wd fuse.

Do you have any problems with any other systems? It mentions a vehicle speed sensor being a possible problem, but it would usually set a DTC in the ABS or ECU memory and turn on a light of some sort.

You could take it it in, it SHOULD be covered under the power train warranty, it is part of the drivetrain.

Well, I took it to the dealer and they said it's the VSC computer, that computer controls the 4wd electronic shifting, too. Of course, $1600 to fix it.
