Bizarre. In newer ones, the VSC is turned off by the diff-lock switch. Will it lock if you turn VSC off?

No. When I hit the VSC Off switch when it 4x4, the "VSC Off" iluminates on the pannel...the diff lock being locked is depicted by the center orange light staying lit, right? (inside the 4x4 "wheels" diagram?)
