Default What's the deal with the Back Window ECM?

So I have replaced our rear hatch window motor twice in two years. Then I found the TSB on it. I plan to remove the window stop, but the TSB also mentions replacing the ECM on the back hatch with the new part numbered unit. What's different? Can I run without the stop with the old ECM? And why the hell is there a computer for the back hatch? I understand that it makes it so that the wiper won't work without the window up, but a couple of micro switches and limit switches would have done the same thing. Way too many computers!
Thanks,
Jerry

I didn't replace the ecu or the motor, just removed the stop and smacked the motor with a hammer a few times. I make sure to use the window once a week to prevent any jamming and it's been working fine so far.

Pewter05,
Thank you. If I get a chance today I'll remove the stop. By the way, does your 'Yota have the overhead display? If so, does yours get warm/hot to the touch if you touch the actual readout area? I have a seperate post about this, but only one response to it.
Thanks!
Jerry

Yes, I have the overhead. I'm not sure how warm it gets, but I imagine all the bulbs help generate some heat. Does it get hot during the day with the lights off?

Yes, even with the display turned off it is still quite warm. I need to check that answer. I remember turning it off and checking it 20 minutes later on a trip and it was still warm, but I'm not sure how long it will hold heat in the plastic. I need to drive it a day with it off completely and see for sure. I was surprised that the digital display could generate so much heat (if that is all that is really happening)
Thanks,
Jerry
