Default Rusty rear window mechanism

Hey guys! I had my rear window get stuck in the down position, it was ending up kind cocked in the track. Turns out the track was all rusty and the guide on that side wasn't able to get by the rust. All of the mechanism in there was really rusty. Has anyone else had this issue and what did you do? I've thought about taking it all out and trying to clean it up, but I haven't had much luck trying to clean rusty metal. I'm guessing replacing all of that would be quite expensive.

I don't really use the rear window much, so I just unplugged the motor so no one would accidentally open it and then not be able to close it again. I sprayed JB80 on everything hoping it might at least slow down the rusting!

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Mike

Well, you could take it all apart and treat the corroded metal with POR-15 from your local automotive paint supplier. Just clean up the loose debris, mask off what you don't want dripped on and paint it on with a brush. It will dry to a rock hard finish keeping it from rusting anymore. Hopefully you have enough metal left to work with. Then whatever moving parts you can get to, apply some good poly lube. Some of this may also be due to your rear window rubber seal shrinking and cracking...and letting too much water in?? I know I had to do a similar project with my old 91' runner and replace the rubber seal. Good luck with it!
