Before I bought my '03 Tundra, we saw a Ford F250 that had a nifty "Reverse Sensing System" (I think that is what it was called). My wife was wanting one of these for her '03 Sequoia. I have seen an aftermarket one advertised for Toyotas, but didn't like the system as much as the one in the Ford. The Ford system had four infrared (?) detectors spaced evenly accross the rear bumper and when in reverse, they activated a tone if you were within a few feet of an obstacle.
The one I didn't like, had an LED readout of distance from an object mounted in the overhead console near the trip computer. I figure that when backing up, a person should be turned around looking back, not at their forward-looking sensor readout.
Any ideas or Mods for OE or aftermarket, tone-generating sensor kits? I bet the parts (some infrared LEDs, plastic covers and a piezo buzzer, maybe a small circuit board and a few components) are less expensive than the wire to assemble them, but my dealer wanted about $800. This would be an easy Saturday project for anyone comfortable with simple electronics.
Thanks in advance.

Works good. 2 sensors mounted behind bumper (protected). I called Rostra and they mentioned that in the fall their "new" system will be out. only major difference is that it will be a "learning" system. The current model does not deactivate(reactivate?) if the obstacle is no longer there. You must take it out of reverse and then put it back in to reset it. My driveway is at angle and it senses this an obstacle and starts beeping fast. I must reset if I want that to stop once in driveway. This was how it was originally designed with the thinking that when you hear the beep you are supposed to stop, get out check for obstruction, then get back in and continue thus "resetting" the system.
Either way it works good and should have been an option from the factory. The bottom of the rear window on the Sequoia is about the same height as the roof of my Corolla (you can't see the hood if you tried)
Cost $300 from manufacturer (insurance deductible $500????) 2 shops by me quoted $325 installed (thanks I can pick it up when?)
If you have a hard time finding dealer (I did originally) Check any stereo shop that deals with Audiovox (DVD's, VCP, TV's etc) Audiovox is buying from them and putting a brown box around it to resell through their reps. When I found this out I called several shops and sure enough MANY local dealers either carry it or can get it.
Thanks, guys. I bet the one I saw was the Performance one, but I didn't read it and therefore didn't know it was also an audible signal.
I just searched Performance and came up empty. Any idea what their part number is? I have an order for some goodies at their store already. I could probably have this added to it.
Alternatively, I could just stroll down to the electronics store and see if they have any such kits for cheaper. If I have any luck, I will post the parts list.
Thanks again for you help.

I am looking to install backup sensors on my 2003 Sequoia. I am considering the rostra system. Anyone have recent experience with rostra or any other backup sensor system? Can someone please recommend an installer in the South Orange County California area?
I'd like to take it one step furthur and get a rear camera and monitor installed like the ones found on acura MDX. Anyone know what these might go for?

I got the backup sensor for my Tundra on ebay (item #2460708232) for $88 plus $15 shipping from Hong Kong. It has 4 sensors and works great for my truck. The item # above is for a VW but the system works for just any car. You have a choice of drilled or adhesive sensors. The guy shipped mine very promptly (got it within 10 days). Hope that helps.
Read my post below (from August). Nothing has changed. Rostra system is working well with no issues. It has survived the winter of snow and ice build up and works just as day one. I like this system because the 2 sensors mount behind the bumper fascia where they do not get damaged. The piezo speaker and 3 LED's are mounted by the rear cargo light (so you see it when you turn your head to back up). It kept my wife from backing into a "low" pole so it has already paid for itself. The dealer who put it in only charged $25 bucks more (installed) than I could buy it for from Rostra. He also gives lifetime parts and labor warranty so it was worth it to me. The ebay systems I saw only worked to a distance of 1.5 meters (about 5 feet?) according to the instructions and pictures with the LED display. The Rostra starts at about 12-15 feet and gives you solid tone and red LED at 4- 5 feet. It actually looked real easy to hook up but again $25 lifetime warranty worked for me.
You have to run it under the bumper. The behind the bumper version is for cars with plastic bumpers. It comes with a metal bracket that you bend to fit between the chrome over bumper (or painted) and the under brace. It ties into the reverse lights with a relay so it comes on when you put it in reverse. The best part is the sound and LED tree light warnings it gives you as you get closer to an object

I live in a beach town where parking is tight and you have to do a lot of close parallel parking. Can it distinguish when I am closer than about an inch (i.e. if the sound stays on when closer than several inches, I won't know when I am really close which is the norm when parking around here).
Also, I am not clear on where it mounts but if it mounts below the bumper, doesn't it become pretty vulnerable when you are offroad?
