I have often wondered about the altered mileage when changing tire size from OEM. If what you say is true - 60 MPH is actually 62 MPH then for every 1000 miles on the speedometer you will get 33 extra miles for free. For every 30,000 you get an extra 990 mi for free.

I just put on a new set of Michelins and had them installed with the white lettering out as well. I really like it, wife didn't so much but she it's growing on her. I think it looks nice and had the chance to park next to another silver Sequoia with out the OWL and ours definately looked cooler, imho.

What is the largest BFG tire I can put on the 16" stock rim on a regular suspension Seq? Without rubbing and the slightest bit of rubbing. Thanks

Thanks for the comments everyone. Here's a few of my own:

1. The Sequoia is actually dirty in that picture having gone through a few days of rain. I didn't have time to wash the whole car, I just washed the tires . I used Eagle One Nanowax a while ago with good results.

2. I considered the effects of the larger tires on the speedometer. I normally don't drive the speed limit anyway so going faster by a bit won't really effect my ability to avoid tickets. However, I didn't consider the beneficial effects on the odometer .

3. There is minor rubbing with the new tires. I didn't notice it until the tech at the dealership pointed it out when I went in for an alignment. When the wheels are near fully-turned, one edge of the tire will slightly rub against the splash guards when the suspension is compressed. I never noticed this before (and I'm pretty anal about these things--as my wife tells me). This situation really only occurs when I'm driving slowly anyway--like turning into a driveway so it doesn't concern me. I might remove the splash guards again to see if the tire will rub against the lining. The new tires I have are 31.6" in diameter. I don't know what the equivilant would be on a 16" rim, but you could probably go with a similar size and get only minor rubbing. I used http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html to check out sizing.

4. The dealership couldn't perform a wheel alignment with the new BFGs. The BFGs have a rim protector--a section of rubber that extends over the edge of the rim to protect it from off-road hazzards. They recommended a shop with a laser alignment machine. I'm going to schedule an appointment later this week.

5. The BFGs handle pretty good. I've taken it on the freeway for some (brief) high-speed stints and it felt very stable. I've never had a LT tire before so I didn't know what to expect. With the new tread, response seems a little slower--I guess I was basically riding on slicks before . I can't wait to get off-road!

Hmm...I'm not sure I should reveal the secret. This is what I did:

1. Use the lasso to draw around the object you want in focus.
2. On the menu, inverse the selection.
3. Apply the blur filter.

OK, now--don't tell anyone else...ooops, did I type that out loud?

I have LT M/S 275-70-16 on my 01 LTD for the last 10k miles and it still looks new with very smooth ride.....oh yeah NO rubbing whatsoever and the spare fits in perfect as well. YMMV.

Hope it helps.

Default BFG All-Terrains T/A

Stargazer, any problems with the tire's larger size rubbing the wheel wells in the front during hard turns or off-road shock compression? I go off-roading fairly often in the Colorado Rockies...want to make sure they will work well off-roading. Thanks...

Ultimately I went with the BFG instead of the Revos because I wanted the durablity of a truck tire for off-roading. I've already suffered a puncture off-road and I want to reduce the chances of it happening again.

It's incredible how prices ranged in the shops around here. I had quotes from ~$230 to $271 per tire for the Revos. (The OEM 265/65/17 were always more expensive.)

The BFGs are 1-inch taller than the OEM size so when the speedometer shows 60 mph, I'll really be going 62 mph. It's funny how anal different shops can be about non-OEM sizes. One said it was beyond their allowable specs while another said it was within it.

Anyway, here's the latest picture. I like the larger size because it fills the wheel well a bit more. It's a tight fit for the spare but it works. I chose the OWL to show because I wanted a more "truck-like" look:

Truthfully, it really depends on the dealership. Some dealerships will do a lot for you, others for will do a lot for themselves. Just try it.

Stargazer mentioned this in his previous email: "3. There is minor rubbing with the new tires. I didn't notice it until the tech at the dealership pointed it out when I went in for an alignment. When the wheels are near fully-turned, one edge of the tire will slightly rub against the splash guards when the suspension is compressed. Anyone else experience this after having 265/70/17 tires installed on the stock 17" wheels? Did removing the splash guards fix the problem?

Thanks...

I've got an '04 limited 4x4 with a 3" coil spacer lift and want to go with a larger tire. Currently I've got 265 65/17's. Any recommendations on what works well with the stock wheels? Rubbing? I'm looking at something a little less aggressive than a BFG A/T KO, but with decent traction. input?
