Default Infinity 6002i Speaker Install on 03 Seq

Well, after researching what speakers fit in the Sequoia front doors, I decided to purchase the Infinity Reference 6002i (about $80.00 for the pair).

When I called Crutchfield they told me there wasn't a speaker that fit, and when I specifically asked about this speaker, they said I would have to rip apart the factory speaker mounting, and it would render the factory speaker useless. I said "Thanks" and hung up. Today I went to Circuit City and decided to buy a set of four (for front and back doors) of the 6002i.

I got home, and pulled of the front door panel. The guy at Crutchfield was right on. The factory speaker is in a huge mounting bracket, and the speaker will not just screw in where the bracket came out. I decided to take the plunge and cannabalize the factory speaker and mount. I broke all of the plastic support structure on the back side and cut the speaker "material" on the front to take out the actual speaker itself. I also popped out the connector where the wiring went to the original speaker so I would have a hole to run the wires back through. Then all that was left was the bracket.

I mounted the Infinity supplied brass colored ring on the bracket using 4 Infinity supplied screws, then mounted the Infinity speaker using the four Infinity supplied short screws. I cut the factory connector, and crimped on one large and one small female connectors and connected them to the new speaker. I remounted the whole assembly, and they fit perfectly.

By the second speaker, I was a pro, and figured out how to get the door on and off with no problems. I was even lucky enough to have two Infinity emblems off of an old pair of speakers, and I mounted them on the door where the speaker is. I placed them where the JBL logo goes from the factory, and I think the Infinity emblem looks nicer, IMHO.

By the way, they sound great. I tried to do the back doors, but the mounting brackets from the factory were smaller, and I could not figure a way to do it, so back they go to the store. Besides, I never sit in back!

was there alot of room when the door was removed where the speakers were? Tomorrow my sequoia is going in for 3 way DLS comps. When the door was removed was there only one 6.5 speaker in there?

Yes there was only one speaker, and what do you mean was there a lot of room? The speaker I put in almost touches the grill, actually I think the tweeter touches the grill. The 6002i has a tweeter that extends out quite a bit.

I ordered 6002si's from Crutchfield and they included, for free, an adapter plate which makes it fit and also Toyota connectors. Order it online and the following items will automatically be put into your shopping basket.

P/N 12071035 Toyota Wire Harness speakers Free
P/N 142SAC656 GM/Jeep SAPs 5.25"/6.5" Free

Just to be clear, I installed the low profile 6002si, not the 6002i... been there, done that with oversized speakers....

Well, I decided not to return the rear speakers and I opened up the door again to take another look. Turns out I could cannabalize the rear mounts also, and they fit perfectly! Now I have the full Infinity setup and it sounds great!

Thanks for the tip about the 6002si, but these puppies fit fine the way I want them to.

I am curious to see what adapter plate Crutchfield sends...I picked 2 of them up for the rears from a local Stereo shop, (made by Metra), but did not end up using them. They would have seated the speaker too far back from the door grill, and the sound would have gotten lost in the door. Make sure you check this before you install yours.

Well, if the tweeter currently is almost touching the grill, what I'm about to recommend wouldn't work. But if you were to buy regular comps then you don't have to worry about the tweeter extruding from the middle of the mid, so you have room. Simply make a spacer. Cut out a piece of wood(make a ring) so that your speaker fits in it. Mount the ring to the factory bracket, then mount the speaker to the wood. It helps when mounting deep speakers also, because it effectively moves the speaker away from the window rail.

Well, my installer just put the DLS 3 ways in for me. 6.5 and 3" mids in the door. He said there was alot of room, and all he had to do was cut a baffle to mount them. So don't see why there's problems with jsut a regular 6.5 going in.

Just wondering (maybe a stupid question)...we've got the '03 Sequoia with the 10-disk changer and 'premium' sound. Sounds fantastic up until max. I wouldn't have thought that Infinity Reference would've been an upgrade over what's in there. Also thought the sound was watt-limited, not speaker-limited. Finally, is adding an amp to the stock head unit an option?

Thumbs up Re: Infinity 6002i Speaker Install on 03 Seq

Unfortunately I found Infinity 6002si no longer available from Crutchfield.

I offer the following solution that worked great for me...

My front woofers were blown in my 2002 sequoia and after reading various postings I bought a pair of Kicker SSMB6 6.5" midbass drivers from tectronics.com. They had them on sale for $78 (Retail over $200).

I removed old JBL's (woofers only) and left all existing brackets and the midrange speaker in place. I used JBL speaker as a template to cut out Lexan (plexiglass) and mounted Kickers to the Lexan. Then screwed lexan to existing mounting bracket using JBL screws. BTW, bought Lexan from Home Depot in 12 x 8" pieces that were $4 each.

The Kickers came with push to connect terminals so I just cut off the old connector, stripped short section of wire and connected the two wires to the new speakers.

Because I kept existing tweeters and midrange these Kickers sound amazing and provide lots of bass. Only took about 1.5 hours per door and most of that was making up the Lexan mounting brakets. They are a flush mount speaker and they fit perfectly into the space with no obstruction when I re-installed the door panel.
