Default Sequoia Keys

I want to add some extra keys (transponder type) so family members can use the Sequoia without having to pass keys around. So 2 questions:

1. Is there a limit to the number of keys the ECU can handle? if so, is there a work around for this like cloning or something.

2. Short of paying the dealer $50 to program the new keys, is there a way to do it yourself kinda like the key fobs open door, close door..... sequence?

Default keys

try ebay. i have seen blanks for as little as $15.,the same goes for extra keyless remotes i also remember reading somewhere, possibly at ts, that you can program as many as 10 keys on a single vehicle. try a search on this forum. instructions to do the programming can be found here as well as in the factory manual.
good luck

After reading the info provided by nhparrot, thanks again, the max number of keys is 4 master keys and 2 sub keys. The max number of remotes is 4 which I got from a coworker for $10 each and programed from the instructions found on this site.

Default key & remote programming

Do those instructions only apply to the '04 model year? Will they work on my '01? Also, is there a model year-specific instructions for programming remotes? Thanks.

Default key programming

So is a 'sub key' the same as a valet key?

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the instructions.
1) Do they mean to say that automatic registration mode is used if and only if installing a new transponder ECU?
2) In section 2, 'Registration of additional master key and sub key' there is no differentiation between programming master and sub keys. So is the master key physically different from a sub key?
3) What do they mean when they say that 'it is possible to register up to 4 master key codes including the registered key code'? (italics added)

Default ========= These two guides should be handy to Sequoia Owners =========

Please note: I own a 2002 Sequoia and has to use the 2001 procedure to program transponder key. If one procedure doesn't work, try the other.

If you cannot download the guide by clicking one of the links below, please email me (bretbowman@yahoo.com).

Program Keyless Entry Remote Approx. $20 (shipped) on ebay.
Note: Timing (see guide) for programming remote controls is critical - if it doesn't work the first time... try the procedure again.

Program Spare Transponder Key Approx. $20 (shipped) on ebay.

(Share the wealth - What goes around, comes around!)

*** If these documents help you out, please help me aquire a wiring diagram for my 2002 Toyota Sequoia. I'm getting ready to install a Clifford Alarm and in dash DVD player, but wanted to map out all my wire connections before cutting. If anyone has a .pdf of wiring diagrams for the Sequoia, please email it to me (bretbowman@yahoo.com).

YES

The sub key will not open the glove box, so on models with a locking glove box it may be keyed differently. As far as the chip / transponder, no difference there.

not sure???

Default Difference between SUB/Valet Key and Master Key

A valet key you can safely loan to a valet driver without worrying about them using your key to program their own copy of YOUR key while your car is in their possession.

A MASTER key MUST be used to program other master keys OR valet keys to your car.

THEREFORE, there IS a difference between the two keys though they do function in simlilar ways.

FYI

Default Up to FOUR Master Key Codes

What this means is that you can register UP TO FOUR Master Key codes "including" the KEY THAT YOU'RE USING to program the OTHER THREE. You have to USE a MASTER key to register OTHER MASTER KEYS. You can register UP TO FOUR, but these FOUR keys INCLUDE the one that you're using to program...

In other words, you HAVE to have ONE master key to program the system. You can add UP TO THREE others. If you INCLUDE the MASTER key that you'd be USING to program these THREE, then that would give you FOUR TOTAL MASTER KEYS that can be programmed to your Sequoia's system.

Hope that helps clarify!

I'm psychic. Actually, the document we were talking about seemed to have the hallmarks of being an English translation from Japanese by a native Japanese speaker. Know what I mean?
