1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "Power folding mirrors...need some answers", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I got a call from my wife yesterday and her first words were, "Don't be angry." Long story short, she was backing out of the garage trying to avoid a car on her left and not paying attention to our sequoia's mirror on the right. The mirror hit the garage door frame, but did not fold backwards like it was supposed to. Instead, the glass broke and also broke the three mounts holding the mirror and motor to the housing. The sideview mirror looks normal from the front but whats left of the mirror is hanging out of the housing. A call to the dealer found that the only fix is for an entire new sideview mirror, to the tune of $238.
My question is this, does anybody know if a sequoia NOT equipped with power folding mirrors is pre-wired for the power folding mirrors? I know that toyota is pretty good about using universal wiring harnesses in their trucks, with each individual truck just utilizing what it needs. I'd like to just order two power folding mirrors, the new switch to control the mirrors, and install that in my truck. Does anybody know if this is possible or am I out of luck? Also, if anyone could locate an exploded diagram of how to take apart my mirrors and doors, that would be great.

I'm not sure if all Sequoias are prewired for folding mirrors but I think I remember reading a thread about it so you might want try doing a search. As for diagrams, my local dealer's parts department always prints out diagrams for me, just tell them exactly what you need and if they're not busy they should just print it out for you from their databass. As for Toyotas being prewired, my Sequoia didn't come with leather or heated seats but when I took the fabric off to install a leather/suede kit, the seat heater elements were already installed with wiring harnesses attached to the seats. One of these days I'll get around to wiring them up to a switch. I always tell the front passenger to fold the mirror in when parked in slots, not as classy but works. You might want to try "www.toyotarex.com," they sell used Sequoia parts so you should be able to get a mirror a lot cheaper.
Thanks for the help guys....I'm going to tackle this thing one way or the other over the next couple of days.

The non power folding mirror sequioas (sr5's) do not have the same wiring harness as the ones that have the power folding mirrors (limited). The mirror wire harness plug end is different altogether. however the harness end at the switch is the same except it is missing the power wire, the one that operated the folding mirror. the worse news though is that the mirrors are in excess of $400 each. i would have done the work to upgrade but I cant justify the cost. Too bad because it is a niffty option.
There is an answer for this problem. It's U.S. Patent # 7,224,265
titleAndStar(7,0,0,false,"","")
There is a new idea coming around the bend! You don't even have to press a button to fold your outside mirrors inward or outward anymore! Check out this U.S. Patent at www.uspto.gov
The patent # is 7,224,265
Int. Cl. B60Q 1/00 (2006.01)
U.S. Cl. 340—436 [340/686.6; 340/825.72] 4 Claims
2. A system comprising an onboard transmitter and a remote transmitter for repositioning motor vehicle accessory exterior rear view power fold mirrors inward toward the vehicle and outward to the driving position, and for opening and closing a garage door, wherein the onboard transmitter operates independently from the remote transmitter when the motor vehicle is out of range of the remote transmitter, and wherein the remote transmitter is contiguous within the frequency of the onboard transmitter for the purposes of opening and closing the garage door and repositioning the mirrors, and wherein the remote transmitter is adjustable with regard to the distance at which repositioning takes place as the motor vehicle approaches and retreats from the garage door.

I am trying to replace a power folding driver's side mirror as well in an '05 Limited. I purchased one online and the wiring plug end is much smaller than the one I'm trying to replace. Was I sent an SR5 model or is there wire splicing involved?
limited has a plug with 6 wires in it, and its bigger then SR5 plug (since SR5 plug has only 4 wires in it). Mirrors are completely different (limited and SR5). Mirror will work (SR5 mirror) in limited model, if you can create a plug for it, but you will loose a folding function.
hope that helps.

Well, I think most likely you got a SR5 mirror

Anyone know how hard it is to replace the wiring harness from an sr5 with the one from the limited? I'dd like to add power folding mirrors to my sr5 and keep it stock.
you would have to replace whole entire SEQUOIA wire harness, in order to make it work. or buy your self toyota electrical book on sequoia, and study wire diagrams, and then add few wires, in order to make it work. Either way, i think its way too much work, for a folding mirrors.
