This is a discussion thread titled "2005 Factory Nav - How to Defeat Stop Feature?", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I have owned my 2005 Sequoia Limited since Nov. 2004. I have two other cars with NAV, and now my Sequoia - which has a really nice factory NAV system, frustrates me because you can't program or even use prior destinations and other features once the vehicle is moving. I understand that this is a new safety feature, but shouldn't a passenger be permitted to operate the nav stystem while moving?
Does anyone have any advice on how to defeat this feature (I don't have a Nav manual - the dealer didn't have any one I bought my car and has dragged their feet in providing me with one.)
Basically you have to interupt the signal from the VSS and the GPS antenna. The existing workarounds that I've seen interupt the VSS only and have a timer to reset it to avoid the GPS signal disabling the functionality. I haven't found any solution to disable the GPS antenna, and I've avoided experimenting because the GPS signal is itself so weak, I haven't wanted to cause any attenuation in the antenna. The easy answer is to disable the VSS (no timer needed) and put some aluminum foil over the dash above the unit to block the GPS signal. My wife LOVES this look
The timer method seems to work, but the screen flashes every cycle.

I figured I'd post my "long-term" solution in case anyone has the same problem. Maybe it will spark an idea for a better solution . . .
I had a local shop add a switch to disable VSS.
I figured I could come up with something more elegant than aluminum foil on the dash. I bought 1 emergency blanket (the shiny mylar kind) for about $3, a can of contact cement for about $5 both from walmart, then found some gray vinyl remnants at a fabric store that match the dash almost perfectly, and some pretty coarse nylon mesh fabric. I glued the mesh between two halves of the blanket, cut it so it was large enough to cover the dash from the window to the front of the dash, extending about 1" on either side of the head unit. I then traced this pattern onto the vinyl (two mirror images) and cut out the pattern, leaving a consistent 1/4" extra to be trimmed after the next step. I sewed the vinyl together on 3 sides, slipped my mylar sandwich in, sewed up the last side, then trimmed the excess.
I read about the mylar trick on a website about some students who did a similar thing to protect a satellite from radio waves. The mesh is supposed to keep the mylar layers from touching -- to create distince layers. Mylar sounded better and more durable than aluminum foil. I figured the vinyl would keep the reflection of the sun off the mylar from blinding us, keep it in place, and make the whole thing quiet to fold and overall less conspicuous.
Now, I flip the switch to cut the speed sensor and put my piece of vinyl on the dash over the head unit and instead of around 30 seconds of use, the passenger can use the navigation features (except for knowing where we are), or DVD as long as they want. My wife even thinks it looks pretty good.
I don't know if I actually needed two layers of mylar. One may have worked just as well -- I didn't test it.
I made a little photo journal of it afterwards and posted the pics in my gallery (sorting by filename puts things in the right order).
The problem with disabling the VSS for extended periods is it blows out the maintenance tracking feature (any miles without VSS are not subtracted from remaining life), and your auto-rerouting won't function if you get off course.

Good points. Yes, in fact with VSS and GPS disabled -- it appears that the vehicle is stopped on the map. Even after I enable everything, it sometimes takes a while (up to a couple of minutes) for everything to start working again. Important disadvantages to weigh against the benefits.
This my first post on this board. I found this link while lurking on another forum. It might work for the '05 Seq. factory NAV. I have not had time to fully test it, but I was able to get to the service menu. Hope it works.
Thats a good mod but i just want to remind everyone that if you cut the vss wire you pretty much void your warrenty for the nav system.

Check this thread, just posted here two days ago... http://www.clublexus.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171662
There is no need to mess with any of the wiring or block the antenna... you CAN enable it in the software, but you have to do it every time you start the car.
The nice thing is, you can actually make the above changes IN MOTION, so even if you forget when you start up, you can activate it at any time.

Never thought about the DVD controls on the DC and Seq.
One thing I noticed is that it doesn't enable 100% of the "parked" functionality, but you can still work around it.
When adding a new destination, it still defaults the new destination to being the first stop on the route, forcing you to use the "reroute" feature (which does work) to put it at the end, or in between existing waypoints.
Also, when adding a new destination, it does not offer the option to select your choice of 3 routes... it still defaults to "Quick 1"
Still, it does everything that you might really need to do when in motion.
