What's good for removing smoke smell from my Sequoia

Hello,

The previous owners of my Sequoia smoked in it. It's not very noticeable, but on a warm day, if it's been parked in the sun, the smell just seems to come back to life.

The smoke smell also "reappears" when the heater or ac fan is blowing.

What have you used to successfully remove the smell of smoke.

I've used Febreze on the cloth (roof, etc.)

I have a Sequoia Limited (Leather seats, etc.)

How many times have you sprayed Febreeze? We have a used Sequoia that is a couple months old for us and previously had a smoking owner. I have used Febreeze twice, and the smell is slowly disappearing. I plan on using an entire bottle, if not more. Spray everything that is cloth. I'm not sure what it does to leather, so I am avoiding that, but I will spray the ceiling and floors.

FWIW, I had a leaf blower fall over in a previous SUV that we owned and gas emptied onto the rear carpet. I took the carpet out to spray it, but had to spray the padding in the truck. I went through an entire bottle and a half over a three day period, and after a week, the smell of gas was gone. Just trying to be encouraging. there may be other products out there, maybe even Toyota has something, but I have had pretty good success with Febreeze. I guess you could also use vinegar in a spray bottle. It seems to kill all sorts of stuff, but then you will smell like a salad for a couple of days.

I'm not really sure how to get any smell out of heater vents, or if there is a filter in there somewhere? Someone else may know.

Natures Miracle from the pet store read from the Toyota vehicle care forum here and here. For the A/C I would go to either www.autopia-carcare.com, www.properautocare.com, or www.bettertruckcare.com and look at Wurth A/C system cleaner. Never tried it but it's a foaming deal that would probably eliminate the crap stuck to the insides.

Spartan Smoke & Odor remover. Your local janitorial supply store that sells Spartan products should have it.

A large coarse-cotton sack full of activated charcoal, available at aquarium supply stores.

You can "degas" VOCs if you park it in the sun with the windows left open a crack on a regular basis.

Running AC with recirc on will trap many smells on the damp condenser coils, but that too is a lenghty process.

They do make mini ion aircleaners for cars which will cut down on the stench but may not cure the problem. Ionic breeze from sharper image and that ilk.

Back when I was living on campus, way before days of fancy products like Febreeze, we had to clean up vomit (not mine) from carpet in a stairwell. To get rid of the smell we used a product I bought at Safeway called NilOdor. It was a small bottle of concentrated liquid. Only a few drops completely neutralized the smell. It was like magic--thankfully!

You could also try something like Lysol spray that has more of a neutralizing component to it. Frebreeze smells nice, but it seems like you have to use it all the time (regularly) because it doesn't last very long.

How about putting a box of arm & hammer baking soda in a cup holder for awhile?

You can try the old fashioned cheapo route and put a saucer of white vinegar in the truck for a day or two(as long as you're not driving it at the time).

Toyota dealer has a machine that cleans out all the vent and A/C system....I tryed it on one of my cars and it works very well every time I put the blower motor on it smells nice now.
