I'm hoping to become a Sequoia owner soon. I intend to buy a 2005 SR5 4x4. I'm trying to decide exactly which option and accessories I want, but have a few questions:
1) I intend to get Wheel Pkg #2, Alloy (Mfr. Code: AG) which contains:
Alternator, 150-Amp
Glass, Rear Side Privacy
Overfenders running boards
Tires, (5) P265/65R17 Mud & Snow
Tow Hitch Receiver
Trailer Harness, 7-Wire w/7-Pin Converter
Wheels, Split-Spoke Aluminum Alloy
Wiring, 7 to 4 Pin Converter 4P
but I am wondering if I also need:
TO Towing Pkg $344 $430
Can you tell me exactly what the Towing Pkg has? Is it more than just the hitch that I get above? I suspect it's beefier cooling, breaks, or something like that but haven't been able to confirm. I don't plan on doing much towing, but I would like the vehicle to be able to handle it if/when I do.
2) Can someone tell me exactly what these airbags are?
GY Restraint System, Head Curtain & Front Side Impact Air Bag $430 $500
Are these just front seat things, or are there airbags in the back too? I've been told airbags are dangerous for small children, so I want to make sure that if these are in the back seats, that they are not harmfull to children.

On mine (2001 model) the curtain/side impact air bags are only protect the people in the front driver/passenger seats... and well worth the $$ in my opinion from a safety standpoint (and having them also reduced my auto insurance costs). If I could have gotten them for the rear, I would have done it as well.
On your first question, my guess (and only a guess) is that the Towing Package would include the receiver hitch, wiring harness, and a transmission cooler (transmission cooler was std on the earlier model Sequoia's and Tundra's but understand it is now an option)

The towing package includes the transmission cooler, which is mounted in front of the radiator. If you plan on doing any towing at all I would highly recommend the towing package because of the extra cooling.
The side curtain airbags are just as the name implies and they cover the first and second row occupants. There is a little more information and a picture here if you haven't already seen it. http://www.toyota.com/sequoia/key_fe...n_airbags.html
The curtain airbags will help protect occupants during a side impact. I don't think the curtain airbags pose any problem for children. The front seat airbags in the dash and steering wheel are a diffrent story. They can potentially be harmful to small children. However, there is a sensor in the front passenger seat bottom that will only activate the dash airbag above a certain weight. I do not know what that weight is though.
There is a switch on the dash to defeat the side curtain airbags so they will not accidentally deploy when you are 4-wheeling and get the vehicle off it's horizontal axis.
A couple of things to think about with regard to the options you have listed.........unless you are seriously married to the look of the 17 inch wheels, I would consider sticking with the 16 inch wheels. I say this because there is a very good chance you will be disappointed with the factory supplied tires. Mine came with the Dunlop Grandtrek AT20's and they are not worth a nickel. They perform very poorly on anything but dry pavement. You live in Colorado, and you will probably want an All Terrain type of tire for better traction. All of this leads to the fact that there are very few options in the 265/65/17 tire size for you to choose from, while there are many, many more choices in the 16 inch size including many LT rated tires.
Get the tow hitch receiver for you truck, but don't spend money on the expensive Toyota branded hitch ball or 7-4 pin converter. You can get these items from local retailers or on-line much cheaper.

For the money, I would get the tow package just for the transmission cooler alone. I think any Transmission expert would say that excess heat is the #1 killer of transmissions and having this cooler can do nothing but increase the longevity of a tranny under any conditions.
I have the 17" wheel package on my '05 and really like the look of the wheel. However, I agree that the stock tires that come with this wheel package may be suspect. In less than 1k of driving I have already acquired a slight "shimmy" in the steering wheel at highway speeds that I suspect is a tire out of balance or even a bad tire all together. As the dealer is an hour away, just have not had a chance to get it checked-out.
2) Can someone tell me exactly what these airbags are?
GY Restraint System, Head Curtain & Front Side Impact Air Bag $430 $500
Head curtain airbags deploy from above the side windows from the dash all the way to the back of the passenger door, so the rear passengers benefit from that. I've read a number of reviews which suggest curtain airbags actually make a big difference in survivability of side impacts. I guess this makes sense since there is very little side impact structural protection in any vehicle compared to front or rear impact protection. For 500$, that's cheap insurance IMO.
The side airbags deploy from the outside edge of the seat upright and protect only the front occupants.
I don't understand why people will choose a large, heavy vehicle and/or VSC for safety then _not_ opt for the additional side airbags.
