I have a 01 Sequoia that is out of warranty, 95,000 miles. I am having a problems with the rear amp having a low sound level compared to the front speakers. I have the stock JBL CD / Tape unit. I did some searching and found out that this rear amp is known to fail and a TSB has been issued. The dealer wants $800.00 for the part!
Is there another type of replacement amp then the dealer?
I read somewhere in the forum last night that it was designed that way (i.e. the sound for the front speakers are louder). I have a 6 months old, 2004 Sequoia and it does the same thing.
I had the TSB performed last year (01 Sequoia with extended warranty). I did not pay anything, but copy of the bill say $500. $800 sounds too much. Not sure if you can install after market amp in place of OEM amp, but if I were you, I would talked to local stereo shop. May want to check ebay... Good luck....

Yes, it makes the difference. Now the volume is the same between front and rear. I think it will be a long shot to have it fixed when you are not under warranty. Here is the reason: I still have extended warranty (truck was at approximately 90K), and I went to three local Toyota dealers before I found one that will take a look at it and said this is a problem. The other dealers were giving all kind of excuses....not covered under warranty...etc etc...very discouraging and real pain. Please understand that I do not mean to discourage you, I am just sharing what happen to me...
Personally, I think they should fixed TSB with or without warranty, especially on vehicles that cost as much as Sequoia....
One more thing for cheaper alternative: junk yard....
No problem, glad I could help....

Chris, when you had your TSB performed did it make a difference? Or was it just like MMVV said it was designed that way.
Also, since I am passed my warranty are TSB still honored or is that only under warranty.
I have the same problem and took the SUV to the dealer, they told me they found nothing and proceeded to set the fader at level 5 and increase the volume. After reading these post I am sure that ther is something wrong with mine. The rear speakers sound much less than the front ones when set at the same volume level and setting the fader for fronts or back only. What does the TSB call out, replacement of the AMP? I hope I can get the dealer to work with me on this once again.

If you can some way some how get it covered under warranty then that's the way to go. But if you need to buy ANY sound system parts I agree with GeCJ7. I would also go to a few local stereo shops and get prices on having them wire in an after market amp. It will sound far better the your OEM amp and it will be a hell of a lot cheaper. If you really want to have OEM I am sure you can find a factory amp on e-bay because many people like myself upgrade there sound system and or put in an Avic. The speakers, stereo and factory amp where the first thing I threw in the garbage. Johnnny

Hello Johnny, I have 52,000 miles on the SUV but I complained about this when it had 32,000 and I have a paper from toyota describing these complaint and dating it at that time. I did not know about the TSB, now I do. I am hopeful that with those two things I can get something done. I purchased an extra warrnty for the SUV but I dont think it includes audio parts. Anither situation I have is that the foam surrounding the front speaker woofer broke. Well replacing this 2ohm speaker is not easy with an after market and TOYOTA wants $200 for ONE! Since I am not going to do a complete overhaul I will try to get it refoamed for $30 for now. Question: Is it fairly easy to get to the rear amp underneath the center console? And taking into account that I probably have 2 ohms two way speakers in the rear, what kind of amp do you suggest (watts, output impedance)
appreciate your input
Tony
My rear speakers put out almost NO VOLUME on my 2001 Sequoia now (90k miles).
I wonder if it is FUSED somewhere? Does anyone have a wiring diagram showing if this rear speaker is fuse protected on some circuit.
I ask because my kids have blown fuses protecting the accessory lighter plug using ac/dc inverter and pc/dvd players on a long roadtrip. It's made me think a fuse protecting the REAR AMP may be tied in somewhere.
If your still having the same "low volume" problem in your rear speakers it's not a fuse. From what I can see in the electrical wiring diagram book there is just one fuse for the amp and if it is blown your front speakers won't work either. And if a channel is blown in your amp then the speakers hooked to the channel should not work at all as far as I know. I know this sounds stupid but did you check your "speaker balance" on the head head unit itself?? : )

I too have an 01 Sequoia that had that problem. I recognized it right away when I bought the SUV new in 01. I had to get the district rep to listen to it and he agreed the rear volume was way too low. They replaced the rear amp and it improved to a tolerable level. It has been 8 years now and my front right speaker has been blown for 2 years(JBL)This sound system really sucks considering I paid extra for the JBL upgrade.
