Does any one have the "do it yourself" directions to replace the door handle? The driver's side was under warranty but the passanger side is now our problem. HELP!

or does anyone know a link to repairing the the rear door latch? I've tried some of the links but they just say unavailable. We have part of the back taken off but it looks like the section of the hatch that's under the license plate needs to be removed, not sure how to take that out without damaging anything? I've got the part but not sure how to access the handle itself.
I'm in the process of doing the same thing... The plastic trim piece behind the license plate must be removed from the inside. There are 2 nuts on either side of the latch handle that are only accessible from the inside via capped/plugged holes on the inside of the door. Once the plugs are removed you can reach the nuts with a 10mm socket on an extension. The remainder of the trim is held in place by plastic "press lock" pieces that can be pushed back through their holes from the inside as well (don't try to pull them from the outside our they will break the trim piece). Hope this helps.
I've got mine all apart, but am waiting on the new latch I ordered from a dealership that I get all my parts from in NC.

Thanks for your tips. My dad and I worked on it yesterday. I asked our local Toyota dealer and the handle was $90 some dollars so I checked online and found it for $52 plus $7.50 shipping, we ordered that one. It took a little over a week to get it. He has a 2001 Sequoia. We worked on it last night. It was really was involved and just trying to figure things out takes time. We ran into trouble with one of the plastic screws that hold the licence plate against the trim. The right side wouldn't budge and I broke the head of the screw off, finally got that out though. Also the bracket that holds the lock assembly somehow broke. I don't know what happened but it fell to the ground and I didn't know what it was at first. I think we could glue it in place but the glue had a 24 hour drying time and we wanted to finish. The lock assembly is in place but it's not attached to the trim piece like it should, so the other press locks are keeping it in place. Those were the two main problem we encountered on this job, other than trying to fit into the tight places. We almost felt like celebrating when we got the new handle in place. It's great to have the hatch working again and knowing we did it ourselves!
I don't check this forum as much as I used to, so if anyone needs the instructions, just email me at afoon2001@yahoo.com. I check this address almost everyday.
Thank you so much for addressing this problem. This is my second interior door handle to just break off in my hand. I love my Sequoia, but they sure went cheap on the door handles. Also, every time I need a new one my dealership has to 'order one' . You would think they would keep some in stock if this many are breaking!
Quarrying 2002 Toyota Sequoia owners. Just yesterday my wife came home and told me that the Tailgate door latch handle broke. I currently live in Seoul Korea and really need to get it replaced as soon as possible. I have a Golden and this is his entry and exist in and out of the vehicle. He loves to ride in the rear compartment area. Please can anyone tell me how much the parts cost and where can I order them from? Korea doesn't have a toyota dealership however, their are plently of Korean who will be willing to replaced the tailgate door latch once I find the Part and get instruction on how to open up the tailgate door to replace the latch.
Hi All,
Just returned from a Memorial Day camping trip when we experienced the same problem. The plastic attached to the tailgate handle broke. I've been searching all the threads and I hoping the info I found here is gonna work. The dealer wants $100 for the part & $500 just to install it. If there is any more info you guys can supply I greatly appreciate it. Still trying to find the replacement part for cheap.
THANKS!
I just replace my rear door /trunk latch about a month ago. The part of a whole new door latch handle cost about $75, Searched on this forum HOW TO and there is one thread with awesome pics and directions. you cannot go wrong. Changed it with the help of a Buddy/mechanic and in 20minutes we were drinking beer. One point would be to clean the actual latch/locking device and lube it good that way it may save on future binding.
That is a cheap way to get it done.
good luck
