1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "What is your gas mileage with 20" wheels?", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
If you have 20" wheels on your Sequoia, have you noticed a loss (or increase if you're lucky) in mpg? If so, what is your current mpg with 20" wheels and are your tires larger or similar size (in diameter) to stock?

I don't have 20's on my truck but I just thought of something. Does your speed Meter read faster with 20's? I am pretty sure it reads a few mph faster with 20's and if that's the case it's going to be hard to check your miles per gallon unless you know how much faster your Speedometer is reading and how much faster your racking up the miles on your odometer. But then again maybe your speedometer reads slower with 20's? I am not sure if it reads faster or slower but I am pretty sure it does one or the other and that will make it harder to check your MPG. I might be wrong about some of this or even all of this, if I am someone please step in and correct me. Thanks, Johnnny

Actually the speedometer would read slower with 20's. Therefore your odemeter would record fewer miles then actually driven. But theres a formula for that to figure out the correct miles and so forth. I've done the math and I am curious as to how much of a mpg loss have others suffered with 20's. Lets just say an Aston Martin V12 Vanquish Coupe gets better gas mileage then I do.

Put me behind the wheel of the Aston Martin and I bet with my heavy foot the gas mileage will go way down. It don't matter what I drive or where I am going it will ALWAYS be a FULL throttle run. Even if it's just to the next red light. Especially in my Vet. I don't keep track of gas mileage in ANY of my cars or trucks it's way to depressing. When the needle gets close to the E I just fill it up with REGULAR gas. I admit I waste gas with my heavy foot but anybody that puts anything other then REGULAR gas in their car or truck is wasting Money. Unless you have a super charger or motor work done there is no reason to put above 87 octane in. Johnnny

The 20" rim has little to do with speedo accuracy. The diameter of the wheel is what is important here. My 295/45/20's are slightly smaller than stock, so they rack up speedo miles faster than actual. 285/50/20's are slightly larger than stock and will register miles slower.

Ahh yes you're right. Forgot to clarify that earlier. So what are you getting for your mpg?

That depends on how I drive. If I calculate actual miles and actual fuel used, the fact that I have 20" wheels is inconsequental.
Took a 400 mile trip this weekend and tried to take it easier than I normally do......got about 17 MPG.

Don't forget that some parts of the US have Oxygenated gas in the summer and some parts of the US have it all year round now. If you live in a state that has Oxygenated gas you will get MUCH worse gas mileage then someone that does not. I am not sure about your area but here in Jersey we used to have it only in the summer time and my gas mileage went WAY down and when the winter time came my gas mileage got a lot better. In Jersey they decided NOT to use Oxygenated gas at all anymore a few years ago but they still use it in many places.
I was told by a Toyota Rep. that Oxygenated gas was one of the main reasons TRD does not make the superchargers anymore. He said that different parts of the US had different emissions laws and it was to costly to make different supercharger set ups for each state or part of the US in order to pass the different laws that had to do with emissions all over the US. My speedo is exactly off by 4mph (GPS tested) with the larger 33" tires.
33's on your Sequoia or Tundra? How does it handle? What draw backs did you have if any? Would you do it all over again? If so, would you have done anything differant the second time?
I was told by someone that was not 100 percent sure but he thinks that the 2005 Sequoia's use the antilock brake sensor in the rear for the speedometer reading. Does anyone know this for sure? And if it does would the speedometer still read slower or faster depending on you tire size???

Is there a way to correct this through the on-board computers? You would think with all of the electronics on vehicles these days along with Americans' need to screw with anything we buy (ain't the US great), this could be solved by a simple recalibration of numbers. Any thoughts?

I know its been discussed before, but I don't think it can be re-calibrated.

I was told be someone that was not 100 percent sure so correct me if I herd wrong. But I was told that the 2005 Sequoia uses the Antilock brake sensor to tell the speed of the truck and if this is true wouldn't the speedometer be rite on no matter what tires or rimes you have on your truck??
