1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "a gas story (i got 20+ mpg today) (i have also gotten 0 mpg before)", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
a gas story (i got 20+ mpg today) (i have also gotten 0 mpg before)
for the first time i tried to get some good gas mileage on my sequoia. i drove it with the cruise control on at about 62 mph at around 2000 rpm, i was getting a constent 22/23 mpg (at least thats what my thing at the top said). the average mpg reads 14.2 it use to read 14.5 3 monts ago but somehow has worked its way down, which is why i am tring to change that now. according to the monitor i used about 19 miles worth of fuel on a 30 mile trip. which i dont know if its true. i have never given a shi** about the mpg or even bothered on messing with that monitor other than the compass and temp.
i was surprised with the mpg i got.
another thing im remebering know that im talking about mpg is another story.
i had put some gas in the sequoia and as i drove it around town for about 5 minutes and it was sucking gas like crazy ( that day i was driving like my grandma , which is rare for me). i was looking at the monitor at the top and the mile left numbers were going down, at first i thought it was because it wasnt reading right and was going to take some time to come up with the right miles left of gas. i stopped and turned off the car hoping that wil fix the problem. so i did the same 30 mile trip that did today and the numbers where again going down slowly but gradually. after about 10 miles into the drive i was thinking a sensor was wrong, so i got pisssed off at the monitor and turned it off. and i was watching my neddle and it also was moving down quicker thanusual ( sort of like my gas neddle was moving more than my rpm when i stepped on the pedal lol). 5 miles left of the drive and i turn on the monitor and it is still reading like a have a hole in my gas tank. i only pumped about 10 gallons of gas, it had some in there already. the gas neddle was a little over the quarter tank. and when i finished the 30 miles it read 10 miles. so as i pulled out the freeway exit, i stopped driving like my grandma and stepped on the gas and let go, (shortly after the feed me some gas light came on) i b.s. you not instantly the mileage on the monitior started reading right and more accurately. it seemed like all it needed was a good o' step on the gas.
i dont know if this is a early sign of something big? any advice on this would help.
as far as the good mpg does everybody get about 20 mpg at 60mph 2000+rpm?
i have a "tornado" lol. and a k&n filter (i use to have the f.i.p.k. but to loud) .
i usually pump 91 octane. oil change every 5,000-6000 miles mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 ( i have about 3,000 on the mobil1 10w-30).
i have been wanting to take out the tornado to see if there is a difference in gas mileage. i never checked for mpg increase i just threw it in, hoping i would get 0.5 rwhp lol.

First of all that "Tornado" thing is junk, just throw it in the garbage. Second of all your Sequoia is made to run on 87 octane gas and nothing more. It's a waste of money to put anything other then Regular gas in your Sequoia because from what I am told the computer in the truck just adjusts to make the truck think it has regular in it when you put anything but regular in it. The third thing is from what I have herd that miles per gallon thing above your head is not all that accurate but I herd if you hold the 2 outer buttons it resets it. If your going to try any testing using that meter I would reset it each time and at every gas fill up.
I notice a lot of people in the forum spend a lot of time checking and rechecking their gas mileage over and over again. Not that there is anything wrong with it but I would just find it way to depressing and no matter what I do I still have to fill it up when the needle gets on E. LOL

That fuel ecomomy display above is rather optimistic. We took a 5500 mile trip to Oregon and back in our '03 Sequoia and I kept track of the fuel consumption. Over all those miles, the trip computer was 1.5 mpg higher than the actual gas mileage.
BTW, the very first day we got that thing, we took it for a 200 mile drive and got 21mpg according to to trip computer.
Mine has always been pretty accurate. I calculate my mpg every other tank or so, just to know how it does from the driving conditions from that tank. My long-term average on the computer is 17.1 (I haven't reset it in a very long time). My last two calculatated tanks were 16.51 and 17.45 (more highway on the latter).
I agree with the post above about the fuel; don't waste money on higher octane. Sometimes if I'm towing I'll use mid-grade, with the thought that the engine has to work so hard it might pre-detonate a little (causing the computer to retard timing some to prevent the pre-detonation or "ping"). It might not be true, but I don't tow all that often and feel it might be worth it in that scenario.
*shrugs* The trip computer in the car *is* innaccurate -- for example, mine doesn't include the reserve fuel in the calculation of "miles left in tank". But its consistent, and as such I use it to gauge how consistent my mileage is.
My long term avage runs (from the trip computer) around 16 mpg, including around 80% city, and around 20% highway.
On long range highway trips, I typically get *around* 19-20 mpg, as measured by the trip computer. Not bad, but not amazing either. If I'm pulling a trailer, it goes down substantially...
Highest I've seen it for a sustained period was coming back through the central valley of California with a sustained tail wind of around 30 mph -- I mean it was blowing, but it was coming from behind me. I ended up with almost 22 mpg on a couple of tanks which I attribute to the strong tailwind and the cruise control set to 70...
Ditto. Don't trust the overhead display. Re-set it next time you fill up and see where it goes.
On one recent 400 mile trip, I tried to sqeeze more miles too by changing my driving habits. Kept it under 2000 RPM at all times. That includes merging onto the interstate, etc. Big difference! I got around 19-20 mpg (actual calculations, not the trip computer).
The problem is that it is really hard to drive like that. Max at 2000 rmp is about 62-63 mph and most people want to shoot you if you drive like that on the interstate. It's really hard to gradually get up to speed as well, making sure your tach never goes above 2000 rpm.
I didn't buy the Sequioa because it gets great gas mileage, but its good to know it can do better than most others out there in its class.

so then in other words that overhead computer is a P.O.S.
I wouldn't call it a POS. I'd call it creative marketing. As on poster said, while usually not accurate, it's good to see how you're doing relative basis.
i nerver really cared about the gas mileage, i always have driven way over the 2000 rpm mark, too where the instant mpg marks 7 mpg and under, but i tought it wouldnt be a bad idea to try to save some gas. so im going to reset it at my next fill up. is it the 2 outer buttons that i need to hold?
When my wife and I were by ourselves we would travel back to her parents house 300 miles away and I would try my hardest to keep the MPG in the Sequoia high. This usually meant keeping the speed and RPM's down ect ect. Now that we are travelling with a 9 month old, I couldn't give a sh!t what my mpg are as long as driving 80 mph cuts 20 minutes off my trip. Because 20 minutes off my trip equals 20 minutes less of listening to a 9 month old crying and that's well worth crappy mileage. The realistic problem with driving 62-63 mph is that most interstates are 70 mph+, which means that most people are doing 10 mph over the posted limit. Keeping that in mind you'll be driving almost 20mph slower than the flow of traffic. What good is great gas mileage if you cause an accident and get killed in the process?
