I have an '02 Sequioa Limited that is having transmission problems. It starts, but when it goes into gear it surges and dies, like a 15-year old trying to learn how to drive a stick shift. I had it towed to the local Toyota dealership, who told me I needed a new transmission because "the magnets in the pan were full of metal shavings." They quoted a remanufactured transmission as around $3200 and I am waiting for a quote for a new one.
Any thoughts? Is this something common with these? Any service bulletins I should be aware of?
I've had the car for six months, put 6,000 miles on it, and towed a boat once a total of 17 miles. Bought it from the Toyota dealership that has it now. Won't cost me a dime more to raise hell...
There have been a few transmission failures here on the board, I cant remember which part but there is a suspect "weak link" in the transmissions.........the recommendation is to tow w/ OD off (doesnt pertain to you, might have for the previous owner I guess)...
This is known with 00-02 tundras. If yours was like mine, then your OD planetary gears and sun gear exploded. Take a look at my pics to see what it looks like both the gears and at the bottom of the tranny pan. At this point, you aren't going to get a "New" tranny. They are pretty much refurbed when the dealership gets it. At least that's what my local dealer tells me. Mine blew at about 75000 miles. Got another one shipped to me(Cali) from florida that only had 15K miles for $1500. If you need the contact for where I got it, let me know.
Replacement was fun No TSB or recall was made by Toyota. All you can do is b!tch and yell starting at the dealer and work your way up. I went all the way to corporate(US and Japan) with no success.
Well, I'm giving in to the service department and footing the bill for a new (reman) tranny at $3200 (tax bringing it to $3500).
I would do the used deal, but the tranny is only 2300 of that and I would rather have the reman warrantied at that cost that a used one for a little less. Ah well, I still like it. Just pisses me off I have to replace it. Transmissions should last over 80k, but maybe that's just my optimism.
Try being calm with the dealer. Ask to talk to the service manager about good will on the trans. If you are civil they might work with you. Maybe not 100% but you could get something. Best is to ask for toyota to pay parts and you pay labor. I have been a service manager for quite awile and if someone came in all hot and in my face I would not help them. Believe me it is not usually up to corp. for the warranty. The reps will go on the managers suggestion of assistance!!!!

You said you bought it from the Toyota Dealership that has it now.
My question is: Was this a "Certified Used Vehicle"?
If so, then the warranty should be 5yrs/100,000 miles.
I also have a 2002 Limited Sequoia (110k miles) that experienced the same exact problem. I drove the car to a transmission shop who told me that the transmission needed replaced. When I learned that the problem did not re-occur for the transmission shop, I drove it to a Toyota dealer - it drove fine. There were metal shavings in the pan, but the dealer told me that he is not too concerned with the shavings.?? The dealer drove the car for a week without any problems. Dealer also found that there was a wire disconnected in the circuit for the overdrive off and there was an error code related to the gas pedal - not sure what this is but it is related to the transmission engaging when you press the gas pedal. Also, the overdrive on / off has not worked correctly in this vehicle for 2+ years. What is the latest on your problem.
I have just had the transmission on my 2002 Sequoia fail. I called the 800# for customer service only to be told to try to make a deal with the dealership as my car was out of warranty.
I am very disappointed with the quality of Toyota. I have experienced two separate occasions where the coil packs had to be replaced. Now the transmission on a 2002. I am tired of hearing that this is not the norm for Toyota.
Every forum I go on I find at least 8-10 owners with this same problem. So one has to wonder why Toyota has not had a recall. My dealer is telling me it's going to cost about $5k to replace.
I just filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic and Safety. I would suggest more of us do the same. Since Toyota is refusing to acknowledge they have a problem.
Many people are citing that debris from other mechanical parts that have failed such as the a/c housings got into the transmission and caused it to fail.
I just filed a claim with the above link as well. Mine failed and I have a nice truck in my garage just sitting because I can't drive it. It sucks because I really do not have the money currently to get it repaired and with it broke no one wants it and if I traded it in I would not get crap for it unless they happened to not notice it being bad.
At any rate I'm pissed mine failed at 87K.

2001 Sequoia Limited Black
I have the 2001 Seq Limited, 102k miles. Exact same symptoms here. A transmission repair company just called. OD planetary gears are shattered. Pulled my boat 2 weeks ago oddly enough. Don't know if it will help me, but I will make sure that the OD gear is never engaged when towing. Cost parts & labor $2400. Dealership cost on just parts was going to be $2600.
i had to replace my tranny in my 2000 tundra for the same reason. if you have access to somebody with a repair shop. see if you can purchase the tranny thru there account. the tranny purcahsed thru my buddy was 1800 new rebuilt in japan from dealer ship.
with a transmission jack we had the tranny out and in, in a matter of an hour 1/2.
that over drive is a weak link in the original trannys and "susposedly" that was addressed in the rebuilt one from toyota. just my 2cents
elizablue, they are blowing smoke up your nose. how can a sealed a/c system get anything in to another sealed system? it can't. the stealership is trying to take advantage of you. the cost for a rebuilt tranny from the dealership (thru a local repair shop) is 1800. and less than 300 to remove and replace. there is a 1000.00 core charge, but if you drop the old one and take it in when you p/u the new, no core charge. there is also a warranty on the tranny. it is just a matter of disconnecting lines and linkage. there isn't any computer recalabrating needed. i did disconnect the negative and positive cables to clear every thing out so the computer would re learn my shift habits.
it is a pain that so many of us have had the same issue with the tranny, but when you look at the number of tundra/sequoia's that have been sold, i belive the failure rate is lower than we think. still stinks when it is mine that failed, sorry got long winded
Seems like a problem with some 01-02's, my 03 has been through some heavy towing, just had the fluid changed 60K, no shavings, runs solid. Cross my fingers for another few years, most of my heavy towing is (sorry for the pun) behind me...
My 2002 Sequoia's transmission just blew up. I had the Toyota extended Extracare warranty and brought the truck in twice under warranty because the tranny was making strange noises and had a weird, harmonic vibration. Anyway, Toyota and the dealer are giving me the complete runaround. I will post my plight in a separate thread, but, needless to say, I'm hopping mad and have just started to fight.
