Will 20inch wheels reduce MPG's?
Will 20inch wheels reduce MPG's?
It's depends on different factors, diameter, weight, driving style etc.
As for me the answer is yes. I am averaging 17mpg and doing the 2000 RPM rule. Driving 60-62mph is hard sometimes but to save gas I do it every now and then. My 20" wheels are also about 80-82 lbs inflated.
In comparison, with my 16" wheels, I was getting about 18.5mpg doing the 2000 RPM rule. Again weight was a factor. My 16" wheels with tires inflated were approx 65lbs each.
Now both diameters are pretty close; the old 16" Revo tires have a slightly larger diameter because the tire is taller mounted. I used the same driving method; 2000 rpm rule. I performed this on long highway trips from San Francisco CA to Elk Grove, CA and the traffic averaged about 70mph; I was the idiot holding traffic back going 62mph. I am running 295/45/20 vs 275/65/16 (I think, I will have to double-check since my 16" are not installed right now).
1) If you increase weight from the stock wheels, then you might see a reduction in MPG.Originally Posted by xcantuaj
2) If you change overall diameter, then you will have to calculate MPG differently since the diameter has changed. Zero net effect on MPG.
3) If you increase rolling resistance with new wheels/tires, then you might see a reduction in MPG.
4) If you put your foot in the excellerator more 'cause you look cooler with new 20's on your ride, then you might see a reduction in MPG.
